Voice Bible Studies, The Book of Job, Job 19:1-22:30, Lesson 6
Zophar’s first point, argued in verses 5-11 is that the joy of the godless is temporary.
However, Zophar’s real purpose in bringing up the issue is in his conviction that Job is guilty of some terrible sin and thus the end of Job’s happiness must be the clear signal that Job had grievously sinned.
Zophar’s speech is narrowly focused on the terrible consequences of sin.

Commentary on the Whole Bible Volume III (Job to Song of Solomon)
Zophar cannot pretend to do it, but he desires that God himself would show Job so much of the secrets of the divine wisdom as might convince him that they are at least double to that which is, v.
Perhaps Zophar might insinuate that, unless God did speedily make such a change as this in his condition, he and his friends would be confirmed in their opinion of him as a hypocrite and a dissembler with God.
Zophar knew Job so well that he foresaw that, how low soever this present ebb was, if once the tide turned, it would flow as high as ever; and he would be again the darling of his country.

 Clarke's Commentary - Job 11
CHAPTER XI Zophar answers Job, and reproves him severely for his attempts to justify himself; charges him with secret iniquity, and contends that God inflicts less punishment on him than his iniquities deserve, 1-6.
That Zophar intends to insinuate that God afflicted Job because of his iniquities, is evident; and that he thought that God had inflicted less chastisement upon him than his sins deserved, is not less so; and that, therefore, Job's complaining of harsh treatment was not at all well founded.
Zophar seems to have had a full conviction of the all-governing providence of God; and that those who served him with an honest and upright heart would be ever distinguished in the distribution of temporal good.

 Job Chapter Eleven
Zophar strikes the readers as the least sympathetic of the friends, but it is just because he so determinedly refuses to take other factors into account that he actually stands the closest to Job.
Zophar begins with the conventional language of disputation, in which the opponent’s arguments are decried as mere words, but needing reply by the present speaker nevertheless.
Zophar’s complaint is not that Job simply talks too much, speaks falsehoods, or even filibusters in an attempt to drown out all arguments but his own; it is rather that he is not playing by the fair rules of legal disputation.

Voice Bible Studies, The Book of Job, 9:1-13:28, Lesson 4
Zophar would also like God to tell Job that he is only being punished for part of his sins.
Zophar was quick with the simplistic answer, but it was not an answer tried and tested by the real experience of a person God described as perfect (tam).
Job’s response to Zophar is his final speech in the first cycles of speeches and it functions as the transition between the first cycle and second cycle of the friends’ speeches.

 Clarke's Commentary - Job 20
CHAPTER XX Zophar answers Job, and largely details the wretchedness of the wicked and the hypocrite; shows that the rejoicing of such is short and transitory, 1-9.
Zophar here hints his disbelief in that doctrine, the resurrection of the body, which Job had so solemnly asserted in the preceding chapter.
These examples were all in point, on the ground assumed by Zophar; and such well- attested facts would not be passed over by him, had he known the record of them; and that he did know it, alludes to it, and quotes the very circumstances, is more than probable.

Zophar's speech is triggered by Job's speech in Chapter 19.
In this chapter, Zophar reasserts the historical fact (remember this is before Jesus' First Coming) that man is punished quickly for his sins by God.
Pulling from context, Zophar may be drawing a certain parallel between Job and the wicked man. Job has a great household, great possessions, and was considered a great man. The he lost his oxen, donkeys, sheep, camels, servants, children, and his health.

In verse 4, Zophar seems to exaggerate what Job has said about his innocence, as the book does not record Job as having said that his doctrine—that is, his teaching—is pure.
The statement in verse 11 regarding God knowing deceitful men is no doubt meant to imply that Job was such a person—either that he was intentionally hiding his sin or that, in the deceitfulness of his heart, he was not admitting his sin to himself.
And "as a retort to Job's rhetorical question (6:5) in which he compared his own cries to the braying of the 'wild donkey,' Zophar employs what may be a proverbial statement about the wild donkey...[possibly] implying that Job's 'empty talk' indicates that he is empty headed (Job 11:3,12)" (note on verses 10-12).

Zophar and Book of Job and Job 11
Zophar subtly changes Job's refererence to possible error in his conduct to a claim of absolute purity and cleanliness: "For you say, 'My conduct [literally "teaching"] is pure, and I am clean in God's sight (11:4)." There is a difference between error and impurity.
In addition, Zophar's characterization of Job's speech as his "teaching" or "doctrine" shows a tendency to intellectualize--as if Job's pouring out the deepest anguish and grief of his soul is nothing but an academic discourse.
Zophar's last eight verses express the standard hope of retributionist theology: if sin is in your life, "put it far away" (v.

Zophar cannot pretend to do it, but he desires that God himself would show Job so much of the secrets of the divine wisdom as might convince him that they are at least double to that which is, Job 11:6.
Zophar concludes with a brief account of the doom of wicked people (Job 11:20): But the eyes of the wicked shall fail.
