Zorkul Lake habited by pseudoosman and tibetian loach, and also by some species of invertebrate animals.
Adjacent to Zorkul Lake mountain territory of South Amur mountain ridge inhabited by Pamir argali Marco Polo, Siberian ibexes, snow leopards, wolves and other species of fauna.
Among the smaller mammals for reserve are habitual: ermine, weasel, red fox, turkestan lynx and Tian Shan brown bear.

THREE U.S. DUSHANBE, May 24 (RIA Novosti) - Three U.S. citizens were detained near the Zorkul border checkpoint on the Tajik-Afghan border, chairman of the Tajik border protection committee Saidamir Zukhurov said at a press conference in Dushanbe on Tuesday.
It might be a misunderstanding because the young Americans had entry visas but did not know that the border should be crossed in special places," Zukhurov said.
The Zorkul checkpoint is located about 4,000 meters above the sea on the territory of the Murgab border detachment on the junction of the Tajik, Afghan and Chinese borders.

The largest alpine lake of the republic is considered to be Zorkul lake.
This is the alone place in Tajikistan populated by the colony of alpine gooses.
Zorkul is the source of river Panji, which merging with the river Vakhsh forms the major aquatic artery of the Central Asia - river Amudaria.

Note that Zorkul lies within the restricted border zone, and to visit it you must gain prior permission from the Russian Border Forces in Khorog.
In 1842, Lieutenant Woods of the British India Navy explored the Pyanj and Pamir rivers as far as the latter's source in Zorkul (the true source is actually the glaciers at the head of the Kara-Jilgasu River in the mountains to the south of Zorkul.
The north side of Zorkul is full of Tajik shepherds in the summer; from the aylaq at Bash-Gumbaz you can trek north (2 days) to the Bash-Gumbaz in Alichur valley (see Alichur Valley above).

Under clause 16 of the Law of the Republic of Tajikistan “On Nature Reserves”, the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan decreed that the Zorkul Federal Reserve be established.
The Zorkul Federal Reserve is affiliated with the Forestry Management of the Republic of Tajikistan.
National parks "Kenozerski" and "Valdaiski" and state nature reserve "Kedrovaya Pad'" are included into the UNESCO's Global net of biosphere reserves by the decision of the International Coordination Council of the MAB (Man And Biosphere) Program.

 Travel Tajikistan - Permit to visit Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO)
Even with the permit, you do not have unrestricted access to travel in Gorno-Badakhshan.
Specifically, you need additional permission to visit Lake Sarez, Lake Zorkul, and some regions near to the Chinese or Afghan borders.
