Zostrianos - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Zostrianos is a Sethian gnostic text from the New Testament apocrypha.
Like Marsenes and Allogenes, the text concerns a vision received by a man named Zostrianos and explains and enumerates, in great detail, the emanations that the gnostics said God (the true, highest, god) produced, in their esoteric cosmology.
Within the text there are indications that the Sethians had developed ideas of monism, an idea from Platonism which is thought to have become part of Sethianism towards the end of the 3rd century.

Zostrianos and, to a lesser extent, Marsanes, form a special case, since, although their transcendentalia are basically structured along lines most clearly articulated in Allogenes, they retain an additional fund of the figures traditionally associated with the Sethian protology and baptismal practices.
By contrast, Zostrianos would be a less precise version of the metaphysics and ascensional practice found in Allogenes, but represent a distinct effort to maintain continuity with the baptismal rite by interpreting the stages of ascent in Allogenes as baptismal sealings.
Zostrianos and, to a lesser degree, Marsanes, represent not only a continuation of the Barbeloite nomenclature, but also either a continuation of the baptismal tradition or a restorative reinterpretation of it, perhaps in reaction to its absence in Allogenes and the Three Steles of Seth, upon whose metaphysical doctrine they could be seen to depend.

THE FIGURE OF HECATE AND DYNAMIC EMANATIONISM IN THE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Intimately related to these three treatises and especially to Zostrianos, whose author was probably the first to introduce the Existence, Vitality and Intellect triad to Sethian theology, is the Sethian Apocryphon of John, ostensibly our first witness to the complete Gnostic myth of Sophia, the fallen divine Wisdom as creator and redeemer of this world.
Each of these figures is in varying degrees 1) equated with the triad Existence, Life and Intellect, 2) tends to be regarded as having doubles or cognates elsewhere in the scale of being, and 3) performs an intermediary function in the process of the generation of the transcendent world depicted in these various systems.
One may begin with Allogenes, which is representative of the metaphysical doctrine of Zostrianos and The Three Steles of Seth; its doctrine of the Triple Powered One is the crucial feature by which the treatise can be placed at a definite point in the Platonic metaphysical tradition.

One of the Nag Hammadi texts ('Trimorphic Protennoia') was written by someone who was still a worshipper of Inanna, a Member of the Heavenly Host whom the wizards had worshipped.
Another text ('Zostrianos') was clearly Zoroastrian in those formative years.
And in Italy as former wizards joined the Roman tabernacle, compromises were made with Inanna worship, but it is important to note that Inanna had enjoyed a high status among the Heavenly Host.

One of the interesting features of this library is the presence of two editions of Eugnostos the Blessed, which seems to be a non - Christian philosophic document which has apparently been "Christianized" in a redacted tractate called the Sophia of Jesus Christ.

 Gnosticism [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
Porphyry, in his Life of Plotinus, tells us that Plotinus commissioned him, along with his fellow student Amelius, to write more treatises attacking the Gnostics on points that Plotinus skipped over (Porphyry, Life of Plotinus 16).
Porphyry also mentions by name two Gnostic treatises that were discovered in Egypt in 1945, and are now readily available to scholars: Zostrianos, and Allogenes, in the Nag Hammadi Collection of Codices.
These texts, as well as the Tripartite Tractate (also in the Nag Hammadi Collection) show how tightly Platonism and Gnosticism were intertwined in the early centuries of our era.
