Black Gate: The Fantasy Cycles of Clark Ashton Smith: Tales of Zothique
Zothique represents the period of entropy; the cyclic nature of history (as embodied by Poseidonis and Hyberborea, powerful civilizations that crumbled) cannot last forever and must eventually deplete all of its energy.
Zothique reverses the ‘Pangaea’ geological theory that all of Earth’s continents were once grouped together into a primeval ‘super-continent.’ Zothique is a single continent at the close of Earth’s history, but far from a conglomeration of all lands, it is the only piece of land that remains.
But rationality is a weak force in Zothique, and the sorcerer Namirrah ignores the warnings of Thasaidon as he plots against the king who slighted him as a youth and set him on the road of necromancy.

The SF Site: The Last Continent: New Tales of Zothique
Short works of dark fantasy, written in an evocative prose-poem form, with situations full of fl humour and irony, depicting worlds where heroes, kings and/or sorcerers vainly try to stave off their impending doom are nothing new.
Smith's tales of Zothique, Earth's future when the continents have reassembled and a dying desert land survives only on the whim of its dying sun, are considered among his best.
In this regard, the stories are excellent in capturing the mood of Smith's Zothique, the richness of his prose, but without simply aping his writing style or reworking his plots.

Tales of Zothique, Introduction by Will Murray
The Zothique cycle, as CAS once styled it, comprises the largest body of unified Smith tales, as well as the realm he returned to most often through the many fitful phases of his fiction career.
Zothique, vaguely suggested by Theosophic theories about past and future continents, is the last inhabited continent of earth.
Zothique as I have conceived it belongs to the future rather than the past, and lies at the other end of the time-cycle from Hyperborea, Mu, etc. The peoples of Zothique, one might say, have rounded the circle and have returned to the conditions of what we of the present era might regard as antiquity.

Sidaiva, court-dancer of Urnmaus, famed throughout Zothique for the grace of her dancing and the beauty of her feet, incurs the jealousy of Princess Lunalia, daughter of King Phantur of Zylac.
As it now stands, given the placement of "The Two Necromancies" after what is the final surviving Zothique tale, "Morthylla," as well as the fact that as far as is known the 1956 revision of The Dead WillCudcold You represents the last time Smith took pen to a tale of Zothique, it concludes this collection.
Perhaps the greatest loss to the Zothique cycle is "The Scarlet Succubus," which Smith described in a 1953 letter to L. Sprague de Camp as "a projected short novel of Zothique, which I'm carrying in my head.

Exotic, sometimes erotic, the florid prose of Clark Ashton Smith's Zothique story-cycle could be summed up as Baudelaire meets Lovecraft; doom and decadence meets mythological cosmology.

Wizard with Words: An Appreciation of Clark Ashton Smith
The Zothique stories are always perverse and unsettling in this or similar ways, but they are also the most beautiful and powerful of Smith’s fantasy stories, and the ones in which he strives most fully and consciously for poetic effect.
The tales of Atlantis could be seen as a middle ground between those of Zothique and Hyperborea, having something of the funereal seriousness of the former without their poetic simplicity and beauty, and something of the sesquipedalian orotundity of the latter without their facetiousness.
However, Zothique is a fantasy, not a science fiction, universe: the level of technology is low and there is abundant use of magic.

Alan Moore's The Courtyard Review - Silver Bullet Comics
By employing the Anomaly Theory to winnow out the 'most troublesome' details in each case - obscure fragments which don't fit the profiles and which are consequently overlooked - and find new connections therein, one detective thinks he has a lead, and heads undercover to a putrid hole of an apartment.
From there he wanders down to hang out in Club Zothique, "an amphetaminefield of concussive music and light, full of underage heat," and waits for something to happen, for the fragments to fall into place.
They do, but things take an unexpected turn when he receives a report from a previous 1925 investigation into child smuggling centred on the old church which now hosts Club Zothique, and a photograph of J. Edgar Hoover from a F.B.I. operation a couple of years later, involving interbreeding in Massachusetts.

Gamers who are admirers of Smith's work are better off creating their own scenarios around his ideas.
Zothique, his end-of-time setting for some of his best stories, is probably too bleak for an ongoing campaign, though very effective for self-contained scenarios inserted into a pre-existing game (e.g., in Pelgrane Press's The Dying Earth RPG).

Via a somewhat complicated plot, Yadar falls victim to the necromancers but by the end of the story the necromancers are all dead, and their mindless undead servants continue to perform their duties.
Vance does somewhat better with the second and subsequent volumes of the series, where he takes the humorous tone of the Hyperborean tales and soars away with it somewhere else entirely.

Dani Zweig's Unnumbered Reviews #3: Clark Ashton Smith
"Zothique" collects the stories set in Zothique -- the world's last dying continent in an unimaginably distant future, once more a land of wizards and demons.
The fantasy isn't very fantastic, the horror isn't very horrific, the heroes aren't very heroic, bad things happen to people we don't particularly care about anyway.
(The Zothique stories are weakest in this respect, featuring a faceless procession of necromancers who keep finding ugly ways for themselves or those around them to die.) But the writing makes the stories a pleasure to read.
