Zoviet France (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Zoviet France is an experimental music collective that emerged in the early 1980s and has included a roster of memebers including Lisa Hale, Peter Jensen, Ben Ponton, Mark Spybey (of Dead Voices On Air), Robin Storey (of Rapoon) and Mark Warren.
Preferring to remain semi-anonymous and out of the scrutiny of the music industry, the band's history and evolution is largely vague.
They are best known for their atmospheric work involving the use of found sounds and tape loops being heavily processed and manipulated further by electronic devices such as effects processors, guitar pedals, and filters.

Most of their early records were issued with bizarre handmade covers, using nontraditional materials in lieu of cardboard, and many were accompanied with the kind of abstract artwork that could just as easily have come from the hand of a mental patient as from the wall of an ancient cave.
Zoviet France reached new heights — in music, instrumental diversity and production polish — with Shouting at the Ground, a double-album which includes "Shamany Enfluence," a very long piece that might be the group's finest effort.
For a band which had performed only a handful of live shows during its first decade, the bulk of Zoviet France's '90s releases are performance documents.

It almost seemed that the longer I was with Zoviet France the harder it was to leave.
The original point behind Zoviet France was to be a lifetime project between all of the collaborators.
When the band first was formed, we all had agreed to not fall into any of the traps which normally cause a band to break up.

The point is that what Soviet France do anyone can do: if music really can have intuitive, subconscious application, and if only music that someone produces themself is ever really going to give them the meaning that they need, then surely they should get out their and do exactly what Soviet France have done.
In Soviet France's case, the harsher cyclic music of their early albums made way for something that was smoother, easier to listen to, and as a result probably more effective in its ability to worm its way into the listener's subconscious.
Soviet France, aware of how the industry operates and trying to avoid its less pleasant tendencies, have also kept their individual identities out of the picture as far as the music is concerned, while remaining perfectly accessible to those who bother to contact them.

To deny membership of the band and deny the influence that the ex-members had on the band is to ignore or re-write history.

I had not been part of this band which had broken up and devolved down to two remaining members, neither of whom wished to continue as a punk band.
There were many reasons why I felt this way; it seemed to me that Zoviet France had undergone the inevitable changes that occur over time but somewhere along the way a kind of division had happened.
To go back to a previous question, I think that during the years with Zoviet France the feeling of alienation returned and grew stronger, tipping the balance back to a sense of desolation.
