 Zsuzsa Polgar
Zsuzsa Polgar (born April 19, 1969), sometimes known as Susan Polgar, is among the strongest female chess players in history.
Unlike her sister Judit, Zsuzsa has participated in woman's events, and won the Women's World Championship in 1996.
Throughout most of her career, Zsuzsa has been either the best or second best woman chess player (behind her sister Judit Polgar.) In more recent events other female players such as Xie Jun have shown similar playing strength.

Zsuzsa Polgar was the first woman to break the gender barrier to earn the 2500 rating and 3 norms in spite of road blocks by the Russians (Soviet Union at that time).
Zsuzsa was not even the favorite to win and she won both events clear first ahead of her sisters and the entire Soviet delegation.
Polgar said many times that her dream is to see women playing chess as well as men and have both gender compete in equal footing.

Critics claimed that Laszlo Polgar used questionable methods to train his daughter, and armed government officials once arrived at the door of their home in an attempt to save them from what they saw as a potentially abusive situation.

 Biography of Susan Polgar
Susan Polgar was born on April 19, 1969 in Budapest, Hungary.
However, in November, 1986, FIDE (with the pressure from the Soviet federation which did not want to see a non-Soviet to be ranked #1) decided to grant 100 bonus ELO rating points to all active female players except her, knocking her out of the top spot in the January, 1987 ratings list.
She was the #1 female player in the world at age 15 and has remained in the top 3 for the past 20 consecutive years.

Zsuzsa was opposed by hard core Stalinist Sándor Serényi, an old cellmate of János Kádár, the President of Hungary.
For example, at 16, in 1986, Zsuzsa Polgar qualified to play the "Zonal" of the "Men's" world championship when she tied for second in the Hungarian National Championship.
Zsuzsa defeated 13 male grandmasters in the 1985-1986 rating period, but after receiving the 100 free points, Maya Chiburdanidze, who had defeated no grandmasters in tournament games at all, was placed 35 points above her.

In 1993 she successfully defended her title against Nana Ioseliani (winning their match 8.5 - 2.5) before losing in 1996 to Zsuzsa Polgar 8.5 - 4.5.
In 1999 she won the title back, defeating Alisa Galliamova 8.5 - 6.5 after FIDE controversially stripped Polgar of her title.
Judit Polgar, who refuses to play in women-only events, has held that place for as long as Xie has been playing at the top level.

As might be expected, the first part of the book deals with the early development of Zsuzsa and her sisters, with some insight into the unique educational perspective brought to bear by her father.
Zsuzsa's husband, Jacob Shutzman, is the one to whom most of the text is attributed, and, it is complemented nicely by many interesting photographs.
Zsuzsa Polgar, one of the strongest grandmasters of our time and the current women's titleholder, should have a great and fascinating story to tell.

Zsuzsa was correct in saying that Nona and Maia were the first two women to receive the GM title but she was the first to earn it through the norm and rating system.
Zsuzsa Polgar was definitely the first female to earn the men's grandmaster title.
Of course, Susan Polgar has had a far more impressive career than Gaprindashvili and Chiburdanidze but that said it is insulting to imply that their title was awarded purely on a political basis.

Zsuzsa Polgar wins New York City Blitz Championship
Playing in her first tournament since winning the Woman's World Chess Championship in 1996, Zsuzsa Polgar was the surprise winner of the New York City Blitz Championship last night, topping a field that included three other strong grandmasters.
After the tournament, Zsuzsa said that she was surprised herself at the result, winning such a strong tournament after such a long absence from competitive chess.
The reason Zsuzsa won is that she broke even in her three matches against the other three grandmasters, but she wiped out the rest of the field, winning all of her games against non-grandmasters.

 Queen of the Kings Game
I originally ran into the Polgars in New York 1988 (where I played Judit) and, since that time, I have chatted with the whole family in Mazatlan, seen Zsuzsa in Pardubice (Czech Republic), ran into Sophia in Brazil (sorry, the dates are hazy) and chatted with Judit in Monte Carlo.
It was often difficult to know what was really going on, so this biography of the Polgar family (concentrating mainly on Zsuzsa) was something I read with considerable interest.
Her ongoing war with the male establishment, her tournament adventures, her battle to win the woman's world championship, the many fine (and well-placed) photos, and the annotated games at the end of the book make it well worth the $24.95.
