The irony was that while the Mandovi and Zuari between them made Goa, or at least Tiswadi, virtually impregnable from a landward invasion, because of their easy navigability to seagoing ships, they also made it vulnerable to a seaborne expedition.

According to authoritative sources, with the central government agencies declaring the existing bridge on Zuari safe for traffic up to 12 tonne, the state authorities have decided not to go ahead with the steel bridge project which was to be constructed on built, own, operate transfer basis.
The authorities said that the existing Zuari bridge, which has been declared safe by the central authorities for vehicular traffic up to 12 tonne, would be thrown open by the end of the month, adding that they were also concerned about the impact it could have on tourism, whose season has already begun.
The parallel bridge over Zuari river was to be constructed in four-month’s time and was to be made operational by mid-November.

The State Government took the decision, after cracks were detected in the bridge on Zuari River in an investigation carried out last weekend, by the experts from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai.
The bridge on Zuari River-an important link between Mumbai and Kanyakumari-will be closed to heavy vehicular traffic from Friday as it has developed irreparable cracks in it.
Commissioned in 1983, the 830 metre long and 10.5 metre wide bridge across Zuari River was constructed at a cost of Rs 18 crore.

However, it is a good way to spend the hot afternoon, in the shade with a breeze on the river.
The first trip started and returned to Agassaimo, near the mouth of the Zuari and with exposed mud banks nearby we were soon watching waders, including several Terek Sandpipers.
We returned to Agassaimo were we had excellent views of Greater Crested and a smaller number of Lesser Crested Terns on wooden piles driven into the river bottom and apparently used by the local fishermen.

Panaji, Jun 14: Zuari bridge, the main connecting link between North and South Goa will be closed for heavy vehicular traffic from June 16, as it has developed “certain hairline cracks” in its upper deck on pier 5.
Chief minister Pratapsingh Rane told the reporters that he will not take any risk as far as the safety of the people travelling on the bridge is concerned and the government would go for construction of a new bridge.
The 830 metre long and 10.5 metre wide Zuari bridge was constructed by M/s Gammon India Ltd at a cost of Rs 18 crore.

Worse, no official posted there appeared to have brought it to the notice of the authorities concerned when the ferry boats were not sighted.
Asked whether any action would be taken against any officer(s), Singh said there was some misunderstanding adding that the ferry boats by mistake were asked by the Office of River Navigation to be stationed  at the Cortalim and Agassaim ferry points at noon instead of 6 am today.
Meanwhile, sources in the River navigation told Herald that no instructions had been received from the authorities concerned about the time when the ferry boats were required in the Zuari river.
