He is attracted to Zubeidaa and proposes to her, she's hesitant at first but she soon relents and accepts his proposal.

Benegal in his earlier interview to Upperstall had said what attracted him to the to the story was the search of a young man for his mother through the people who knew her and the belongings she left behind...
Though admittedly the film does pick up once Zubeidaa reaches Fatehpur and her bond of sorts with the first wife Mandira works pretty well the viewer is pretty much out of the story by then to really care.

She says that she has been getting similar offers (like Zubeidaa) of the similar kind, she is at a point where she can choose what she wants to do.
You can't work in films like Fiza or Zubeidaa expecting them to be a hit or a flop.
