Università degli Studi di Padova - Ateneo news - Zuckermann palace
The new museum seat of Zuckermann palace comprises the Bottacin museum (one of the most complete collections in the world for coins and medals) and the extraordinary collection of applicative and decorative arts, which previously were in the paduan municipal museums.
Zuckermann palace was built between 1912 and 1914 by the architect Arosio on behalf of the industrialist Enrico Zuckermann.
The palace may be considered as a symbol of the new middle-class city arisen from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of 20th century.

The Mendele Review: Yiddish Literature and Language
Ghil'ad Zuckermann's new book, Hebrew As Myth [Am Oved] will be    published shortly and he here gives a refined restatement of the argument he presented polemically in his reply to the Forward's Philologus in TMR 8.013 (December 2004).
Zuckermann commands a position midway between the traditionalists -- semiticists largely who cling to the view of continuous development of a Hebrew language from biblical times to today -- and the "revisionists" for whom Hebrew is relexified Indo-European.
Zuckermann states squarely: "Israeli is a hybrid language based on both Hebrew and Yiddish" as well as on many other languages.

languagehat.com: Comment on HEBREW OR ISRAELI?
Zuckermann says several times that the lack of a continuous chain of native speakers is a basic difference of Hebrew.
Fascinating and multifaceted, Israeli (Zuckermann 1999) possesses distinctive socio-historical characteristics such as the lack of a continuous chain of native speakers from spoken Hebrew to Israeli, the non-Semitic mother tongues spoken by the revivalists, and the European impact on literary Hebrew.
Zuckermann: Thanks very much for your informative comment; I'm particularly pleased to learn about Dola Wittmann, who will be the subject of my next post now that I've googled her.

Wolfgang J. Zuckermann - Short Vitae
After a stint as a child psychologist, Zuckermann, an amateur musician, became one of the first harpsichord makers in the United States and in the late 1950's invented the harpsichord kit, sometimes called the 'Model T' harpsichord, which he sold in large quantities to institutions, professionals, and individuals around the world.
Zuckermann's significant experience as a 'kit builder' on a large international scale has also been one of the important driving forces behind the Access program and its various spin-offs and demonstration projects.
Zuckermann currently continues his research, writing, and editing activities at EcoPlan (via telework) and is in parallel founder and owner-manager of Shakespeare, a bookstore and arts center in Avignon which resolutely refuses the separation of “culture” from the issues of technology and society.

Lingua Franca - 30/07/2005: Why The Language Of Israelis Should Not Be Called Modern Hebrew, Part 2...
The visiting Israeli linguist Ghil'ad Zuckermann explains why the language Israelis call 'Modern Hebrew' is not Hebrew revived, but a hybrid language with its own grammar, based on Yiddish, the mother tongue of its founder population, and on 'sleeping beauty' - or 'walking dead' - Hebrew.
Ghil'ad Zuckermann: Eliezer Ben-Yehuda is the hero, obviously there were many, many other people who contributed, mainly schoolteachers; the schoolteachers were instrumental in the 'revival' of Hebrew.
Eliezer Ben-Yehuda was an obsessive mind who obviously did not allow his wife to speak Russian or Yiddish to his child, and when she sang a [Russian] lullaby to his child, Itamar, he was so furious that he broke a table because he was partly a very obsessive individual.

When Were the Sabbatical Years? (Additional Material)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Suppose for the sake of argument that Wacholder's hypothesis is correct, and that the grant occurred in the spring of 331 BC, not the fall of 332.
Yet the sabbatical date arrived at is still Zuckermann's regardless, since only Zuckermann's dates allow us to harmonize a sabbatical associated with the 177th year with one in the 150th year.
The fact that the Bar Kochba revolt began in the spring of 132 AD is further evidence for Zuckermann's sabbatical dates, based on Wacholder's hypothesis in his paper "Chronomessianism." His hypothesis is that the Messiah was expected to redeem Israel during the Passover season, and during the sabbatical year.

He received a thorough Hebrew and secular education at the institutions of his native city, and devoted himself at the university to the study of mathematics and astronomy.
In 1845 he joined Graetz in agitating for an address to Zacharias Frankel to congratulate him on the conservative stand which he had taken against the Frankfort Conference; and when Frankel assumed the management of the Breslau seminary he appointed Zuckermann on the teaching staff.
He gave instruction in mathematics to those of the students who had not had a regular school training, and taught calendric science in the academic department, at the same time acting as librarian and administrator of the stipendiary fund.

According to Zuckermann, 164/163 BC was a sabbatical year; according to Wacholder it was 163/162 BC.
Since 38/37 BC was a sabbatical year according to Zuckermann, Zuckermann's sabbatical dates must therefore be correct.

The Mendele Review: Yiddish Literature and Language
If one were to agree with Wexler that Yiddish is essentially a Slavic language (as Zuckermann appears to do), and if one were to suppose that Yiddish is the sole component of the newly revived Hebrew language,  then one would have to conclude that Hebrew is also a Slavic language.
Once we realize that Wexler's and Zuckermann's shocking claims are based on the false assumption that the only possible identity between languages is genetic identity, we are left asking ourselves what it is that gives languages identity over time.
If what Zuckermann and Laor (whose political agenda is not irrelevant to the issue in question) are really saying is that Modern Israeli Hebrew is not "identical" with Biblical Hebrew, they are breaking through an open door.
