Zugzwang - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Zugzwang means that one player is put at a disadvantage because he or she has to make a move — the player would like to pass and make no move, but the fact that the player must make a move means being forced into a significantly weaker position.
Zugzwang most often occurs in the endgame when the number of pieces, and so the number of possible moves, is reduced, and the exact move chosen is often more critical.
Zugzwang is a mainstay of chess compositions and occurs frequently in endgame studies.

Zugzwang | Topic Definition | Find the Meaning and Define the Answer of Zugzwang
In chess, zugzwang (German for "compulsion to move", IPA: [tsuːg.tsvɑŋ]) occurs when one player is put at a disadvantage because he or she has to make a move - the player would like to pass and make no move, but the fact that they must make one means they are forced into weakening their position.
Zugzwang typically occurs when all the moves available are "bad" moves, and better moves might be available if the player did not need to move at the current moment.
The zugzwang theme is extensively used in chess compositions and endgame studies.

The traditional definition of Zugzwang is based on the won-drawn-lost value of a position on the board.
Zugzwang occurs when that value for the side-to-move is less favourable than it would have been if his opponent were to move.
Traditional Zugzwang requires a drastic change in value, such as a winning position being a draw for player A when A is forced to move first.

Because this is zugzwang no matter who is to move next, this is an example ofmutual or reciprocal zugzwang.
Mutual zugzwang is a dominant theme in king and pawn endings in the form of opposition - both players attempt toreach a position with the kings "opposing" each other with the opponent to move; the opponent's king must then "step aside"allowing one's own king to occupy a key position.

ChessAssistance.com Detecting zugzwang positions using multipane analysis in Chess Assistant
Zugzwang is a situation where one side has the compulsion to move, but to do so would be disadvantageous.
When the weaker side has no active opportunities or any useful moves, or the number of pieces and pawns is reduced and their mobility is restricted, it may create the preconditions for zugzwang.
A poor evaluation of the position with the weaker side to move is a clear indication of zugzwang, provided that both analytical modules used are approximately equal in strength (and use approximately equal system resources).

Mutual zugzwang (sometimes call reciprocal zugzwang) is when being on the move changes the theoretical result of the game for the worse (ie, if you are on the move you lose while if you were not on the move you could draw or win).
These positions are quite important in endgame theory, and "getting the opposition" in K and P endgames is an example of maneuvering towards a mutual zugzwang position.

There's nothing exotic about zugzwang in a pawn endgame, but this won't long remain a pawn endgame: the impending promotion of the pawns on a5 and e4 will bring about a queen endgame where if anything White seems a little worse.
Endgame composers often try to present a mutual zugzwang in the context of "losing the move": White has a choice of entering the crucial zugzwang with either side to move, and purposefully gives up a tempo to force the zugzwang on Black.
