		The film 'Zulu' was made in 1964, starring Sir Stanley Baker as Chard, Sir Michael Caine as Bromhead.
		The film which was co-produced by Sir Stanley Baker and Cy Endfield with music by John Barry (who also wrote music for the James Bond films) and it still remains to me one of the most dramatic and gripping films ever made.
		Hook was portrayed in the film as a petty crook in the hospital scenes.

	Zulu film
		The film is completely devoid of racist terms and even the phrase "kaffir" is not used even though it was the nom de guerre of the time (many of the men at Rorke's Drift had already served in the Ninth Kaffir War).
		One of the more technical mistakes in the film was the weaponry used by the defenders at Rorke's Drift; as an infantry regiment they would have had standard issue Martini Henry (Mk1) rifles, not the carbines as seen in the film which were used by cavalry regiments.
		Zulu was the big break for Michael Caine who played Lt. Bromhead, who unlike Chard has purchased his way into the ranks and is characterised as being of the old school tie type but he does show his mettle in the battle.

		Zulu is a 1964 film depicting the Battle of Rorke's Drift between the British Army and the Army of the Zulus.
		In 1979, a prequel, Zulu Dawn, was released.
		Zulu was filmed in the Royal Natal National Park, which is about 90 miles south west of Rorke's Drift (the Amphitheatre, which is part of the Drakensburg range, forms a dramatic backdrop in the movie).

		What makes the DVD particularly interesting is the commentary by film historian Sheldon Hall and Robert Porter, 2nd unit director on the film.Although it doesn't delve as deeply as I might like into some of the issues raised by the film, it does raise questions that any fan of the movie ought to consider.
		At the same time, Zulu had to be made for a mass audience to recoup its $2m cost, and it is perhaps this tension between artistic and commercial concerns that makes it such a winner.
		Above all, Zulu is a salute to the common soldier, unsurprising given the leftish leanings of the film's makers.

		Cy Enfield's film chronicles the disastrous engagement that took place between British troops and an overwhelming number of Zulu warriors in Africa's Natal Colony in 1879.
		Zulu was originally released on Ember (NR 5012), albeit in mono only, and later on the Silva Screen label (ZULU AND OTHER THEMES) in 1988.

		Zulu gave us a few main characters to get to know so that when the fighting did start, we knew who to root for.
		The film skims over the reasons why the British lost so dramatically, be it the splitting of the troops or the ridiculously slow delivery of bullets to the front lines.
		Final Verdict: Zulu Dawn lacks the impact of the original due to the basic fact that it's not as compelling for the majority of it's running time.

		The regiment, except for a company of about 140 men (left to defend a small hospital-outpost at Rorke's Drift) were surrounded and destroyed by 20,000 Zulu's at the great rock of Isandhlwana on January 22, 1879.
		Well over 2,000 Zulus were killed in the attack, but only fifty-five British soldiers survived the massacre.

		As `Zulu' is about the battle of O'rourke's drift, one of the most celebrated victories in British military history, ZD deals with one of the biggest defeats of the British army by an indigenous force.
		The film is very balanced by not allowing the stupidity and arrogance of the generals and politicians to overshadow the heroism and sacrifice of the soldiers on both sides.
		Although made some 15 years after the 1964 flim "Zulu", this film is actually the "prequel" to the other and should be viewed first in order for a better understanding of these two events in the British invasion of Zululand.

		This is one of the best war films of all time and one of the best flicks to come out of the 60s.
		Watching his respect for the Zulus grow throughout the film is just one of the many high points (loads of underlying messages throughout the film regarding prejudice to hammer home some moral to the story).
		Films like this make you proud of the courage and determination of our armies in the face of adversity.

		Zulu has become one of my favourites over the years, not only for the stunning cinematography (Stephen Dade), directing (Cy Endfield), screenplay (John Prebble, Cy Endfield), acting the cast, including Michael Caine (below), is awesome and soundtrack (John Barry) but for the warning it gives us about the dangers of colonialism.
		Zulu is one of the great achievements in modern cinema, and blows away the awful blockbusters that are made today by modern (mainly American) film producers.
		It is a lesson in how to make a great film, and how not to be too arrogant in our decisions to go to war with "lesser" nations.

		His Zulu Dawn was a prequel that explained the fighting that occurred the day before Zulu's battle at Rorke's Drift.
		In Zulu, the previous encounter at Isandlwanda is described as solely a massacre of 1200 troops at the hands of an overwhelming number of Zulus, and audiences assumed that the events were some sort of massive native uprising.
		The picture does a fine job of contrasting the British military system with that of the Zulu army, which follows a similar command structure, and itself is composed of 'traditions': tribal chants that help gear them up for their withering attacks.

		The Zulu battle tactic of the 'horns of a bullalo' are not explained at all in the movie,the fact that the entire camp was surrounded and swallowed up in less than an hour and that it was a total eclipse of the sun on that day, which is important to the Zulu's.

		You can't fail to be staggered by the discrepancy between the film's wet-nosed anxiety to please, to affect, and its wide-screen parade of nervy little cosmetic clichés.
