Neil Young: Zuma ---Ink Blot Magazine
Young is comparable only to Bob Dylan in terms of his contributions to songwriting and rock n' roll, and is still an important and vital performer who challenges the status quo and his own reputation with an alarming regularity.
Poised between darkness and light, Zuma unflinchingly documents the road back from hell.
It's been overshadowed in Young's discography by better-selling records, but he never cut a better disc.

Flak Magazine: Review of Shakey, 07-15-02
In many cases — Everybody Knows This is Nowhere (1969), Zuma (1975), Rust Never Sleeps (1979) and Ragged Glory (1991) — it delivers exhilarating rock and roll, and in some cases — Re-Ac-Tor (1981), Life (1987) and Broken Arrow (1996) — it delivers turgid slop.
We learn that McDonough, in an Indianapolis head shop, stared "forever" at the cover of Young's album Zuma on the day of its release in 1975.
In the strong first part of the book, writing about Young from his birth in 1945 until the time he released his harrowing Tonight's the Night in 1975, McDonough gets as close as anybody can to deconstructing a man and a musician that even his closest compadres haven't been able to figure out.

The 50 Greatest Rock & Roll Albums of All Time
Neil adds garage band Crazy Horse to the mix, throws in some great songwriting, and comes up with a wonderful album -- from the jam-laden epics "Down by the River" and "Cowgirl in the Sand" to the tight classic rock radio staple "Cinnamon Girl," this one is a must-own for Neil fans.
A slight improvement over the past couple albums, with a few strong tracks ("Scattered," "Music Arcade"), though he seems to be in a rut -- if the '80's were marked by a frustrating unpredictability, he's now on the past toward unvarying predictability.
It's a bit redundant with Rust Never Sleeps (as many of that albums songs were recorded live on the same tour, but stripped of crowd noise for the album), but still worth picking up both.

TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT, released in July, 1975, though recorded two years earlier, announced Neil Young's emergence from confused agonisingabout rock 'n' roll, America, Life and so oninto a creative spate which makes even Prince look a slacker.
Play these studio albums end to end and the late '70s Young story is that, pouring it all out, he spread his intensity a thinly so that no one album is the great statement.

 HyperRust: R.I.P. David Briggs
David Briggs was best known in rock circles as producer of Neil Young's most beloved works but he was also at the production helm for acts like Nils Lofgren and Grin, Spirit, Jerry Williams, Alice Cooper and more recently Virgin Records' Royal Trux, Nick Cave, 13 Engines and the Sidewinders.
After a fortuitous meeting with Young, Briggs rapidly produced two highly diverse albums, the second of which, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, became a classic guitar album of its period.
Young will sorely miss his contribution, not merely on future albums but also in the production and remastering of a treasure trove of still unreleased recordings.

Neil Young - Biography and Discography
By the time of its release, Young had recovered, as indicated by the record's hard-rocking follow-up Zuma, an album recorded with Crazy Horse and released later that year.
His first album for Reprise was the bluesy, horn-driven This Note's for You, which was supported by an acclaimed video that satirized rock stars endorsing commercial products.
By the time the album was released, he had begun playing with a local band called the Rockets, which featured guitarist Danny Whitten, bassist Billy Talbot and drummer Ralph Molina.

Robert Christgau, you may recall, is the longtime music critic for the Village Voice, and these reviews come from "Christgau's Record Guide: Rock Albums of the 70s" which I got for 48 cents in a used book store.
Scholars will be grateful for the source material: the rest of us will have to settle for the 15:51 of 'Words' which occupies all of side three.
But even 'Ambulance Blues', an eight-minute throwaway, is studded with great lines, one of which is 'It's hard to know the meaning of this song.' And I can hum it for you if you'd like.

jmdl LIBRARY: Smug Joni, Upbeat Neil sing of Californias People: Detroit News, December 9, 1975
Thats hardly what youd call an optimistic outlook but compared to Tonights the Night, an album so bitter as to be indigestible, Zuma is a remarkably upbeat record: Young still ranges and rambles, but his music, good old three chord rock n roll, is more orderly than its been in a long time.
While Neil Youngs Zuma isnt without precedent, either, on once occasion it, too, turns away from what is close at hand and tries to detail the collision of two cultures.
Sex and romantic attachment are subjects that she has touched on in each of her seven previous albums, but Edith and the Kingpin and Shades of Scarlet Conquering are more subtle than all but a handful of the many tales of dalliance that have appeared on predecessors of THOSL.

 Definition of Neil Young
Young's latest album Greendale, which was recorded with Horse members Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina, is a rock opera that chronicles the saga of a California family torn asunder by post-9/11 America.
Their album Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (May 1969) -- credited to "Neil Young and Crazy Horse"-- was recorded in just two weeks, and is dominated by two lengthy jams, "Cowgirl in the Sand" and "Down by the River", which showcased the understanding between the musicians and Young's idiosyncratic guitar soloing.
The accompanying albums Rust Never Sleeps (new material, recorded in front of a live audience but essentially a studio album) and Live Rust (a mixture of old and new, and a genuine live record) captured the two sides of the concerts.

Neil Young : Zuma - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Young had abandoned the ragged, first-take approach of his previous three albums, but Crazy Horse would never be a polished act, and the music had a lively sound well-suited to the songs, which were some of the most melodic, pop-oriented tunes Young had crafted in years, though they were played with an electric-guitar-drenched rock intensity.
Having apparently exorcised his demons by releasing the cathartic Tonight's the Night, Neil Young returned to his commercial strengths with Zuma (named after Zuma Beach in Los Angeles, where he now owned a house).

Crazy Horse don't play with Young on every album but a quick scan at titles like 'Ragged Glory', Rust Never Sleeps', 'Zuma' and 'Sleeps With Angels' makes for some of the greatest rock records of all time.
While Young has jumped through various styles from hard rock to country to rhythm and blues and AC, Crazy Horse have remained focused as one of the greatest rock bands on the planet.
Sometime in the 90's Neil Young was christened the Godfather of Grunge but the title really belonged to his band Crazy Horse.
