Johnson Chapel was immersed in darkness as the murmurs of anticipation grew louder.
At “Jambo!,” their annual concert, the Zumbyes left the audience clamoring for more with their characteristic mix of dancing, comedy and, of course, wonderful blending harmonies.
It is obvious that the Zumbyes put almost as much effort into their dance routines as their harmonies.

Amherst College's oldest a cappella group, The Zumbyes were formed fifty years ago (in January 1950) by a group of eight freshmen who were more interested in Jazz than in traditional collegiate repertoire (barbershop, glees, etc.).
During the Zumbyes' first year the group practiced nightly in the basement of Stearns Dormitory.
But a Zumbyes concert is more aptly called a show—our performances are constructed equally around the musical fare and the irreverent humor.

Pete and J | The Music of Pete Harper and Jason Blynn
J tried to convince Pete to audition for the all-male a cappella group he was directing that year, the world-renowned "Zumbyes." Pete was quite uncomfortable with the idea.
Pete ended up joining the Amherst College Zumbyes, even though it was and still is well understood that college a cappella is super lame.
Then I went to Amherst College, where I sang with the goofy Zumbyes, studied jazz arranging and composition at UMass, met Pete, and played with the Naughty Muffins.

Muses attempt coy sexual innuendo in performance   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The three-group concert put on by the MIT Muses last Friday proved the old adage that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
There seemed to be a lot of play-flirting going on between the two groups, from the Zumbyes wondering publicly whether they could get dates with the Muses later on at a post-concert private party to the Muses picking couples at random from the audience and imploring the males to "Kiss the Girl" (a song title).
They all sang well, and some of the Zumbyes' astronomically-inspired choreography (moon, sun, and star bodily formations) were absolutely brilliant.

The ICCA is a competition in which 108 college a capella groups from around the country compete in quarterfinal competitions, in which two groups are chosen to move on until finally the winners of all the competitions reach the finals.
The quarterfinal competition the Chordials competed in was held at Immanuel Congregational Church in Hartford against five other groups from the area that included: the Amherst Zumbyes, the Boston University Dear Abbeys, Boston University Terpsichore, University of Hartford L'shir and the UMass Amherst Vocal Suspects.
Second place went to the Zumbyes, who opened with an outrageous showing of "You Spin Me Round" by Dead Or Alive, then slowed it down with a smooth doo-wop song, then sang a samba tune and closed with "Working Day and Night" by Michael Jackson.

The Zumbyes, after taking a few years off, will be competing in the International Competition of A Cappella.
Amherst College's oldest a cappella group, The Zumbyes were formed fifty-six years ago (in January 1950) by a group of eight freshmen who were more interested in Jazz than in traditional collegiate repertoire (barbershop, glees, etc.).
It was then that, in the midst of a search for a distinctive name, Steve Miller, charter member baritone, pulled “Zumbyes” (pronounced zoom-buys) out of a hat and it stuck.

They were entertaining and boyishly funny, but I suddenly had to suppress a mild attack of the giggles, as I recalled a recent book that I read, whose main character was reduced to hysterical laughter and tears at a college a capella performance.
My friend K always thought they were rather absurd, but I was an avid follower of my college a capella groups, the DQs and the Zumbyes (yes, we had 2 male groups at the "singing college"...and 2 more for women).
Entertaining but smart, they were the cool geeks.

I'd heard the Amherst Zumbyes' version of "Underdog", which they made into an entire Underdog skit, and I liked the idea of having all of that action.
I've always loved the Mighty Mouse theme (and it's already arranged), and I liked the Underdog theme, so I stuck these in (and pretty much lifted the Zumbyes' arrangement of Underdog).
I needed a badguy and went with Lex Luthor, since he's Superman's nemesis.

The Amherst College Zumbyes, Brandeis Voicemale, Boston University Allegrettos, MIT Chorallaries, BU Dear Abbeys and Northeastern Downbeats pulled out all the stops as they competed to win the chance to be the one group to receive a bid to the ICCA finals on Broadway in New York City on April 26.
The six a cappella groups got to the competition tonight by finishing in the top two at one of the three ICCA Northeast quarterfinals.
The night's big winners though were the Amherst College Zumbyes, called by The New York Times "the most dangerous college a cappella group alive." For the Zumbyes, who were disqualified in last year's ICCA Northeast semifinals for exceeding the 15-minute time limit, the night proved to be sweet revenge.

Since there was no musical theater program that consistently offered productions at the College, he looked elsewhere to utilize his talents, always keeping in mind that he intended to perform as part of his thesis.
For three months, he balanced “How to Succeed” rehearsals, Zumbyes rehearsals and competition preparations, the written portion of his thesis and frequent trips to New York.
For the audience of his final Zumbyes show, just as for the audience of “How to Succeed,” Clowdus embodies the words of a James Taylor hit, one of his solos in the Zumbyes: “Whenever I see your smiling face, I have to smile myself.”
