In the fall of 1831 Büchner matriculated as a student of medicine at the University of Strasbourg.
The assembled Zurich faculty – including the University's rector Lorenz Oken, an illustrious natural scientist of the time – were greatly impressed, and Büchner was immediately appointed lecturer.
His funeral on 21 February at the Zurich cemetery was attended by many friends, both mayors of the city and the University faculty.
