 Zurna FAQ
Zurna is a musical instrument of the wind family, with a reed for generating the voice, and a tubular body with fingerholes like in a flute.
The reed of zurna is a cylindrical bamboo pipe thinner than the little finger, where the stiff and shiny glaze is peeled off, the zurna side is attached to a conical metal body, and the mouth side is flattened to a very narrow ellipse.
It is worth noting that zurna and obo players are those among musicians at most risk for occupational hasard (trouble with saliva secretion) because of the need to exert high pressure over long stretches of time.

Davul-zurna are usually played outdoors, not least due to the penetrating, “shrill” sound of the oboe and the high volume of the ensemble.
In Anatolia, a differentiation is made between three sizes: the large, low kaba zurna, the normal (orta) zurna (corresponding to the Macedonian "velika"), and the cura zurna (corresponding to the Macedonian "velika" and the Greek "pipiza").
In Greece and Macedonia, however, often two shawms are played to the drum, with the (alternating) drone of the second zurna accompanying the melodic play of the first.

THE ZOKRA OR ZURNA - aerophone
Zokra or zurna (shawm) I have been a student at the High School of Music for three years now.
I have learned all about musical instruments and I see students practising on them everyday (the ud or lute, the violin, the qanun, which is a psaltery or zither, the nay, etc.).
Teaching folk instruments such as the zokra in music schools could help preserve this instrument as well as protect a musical style and repertoire that are in danger of disappearing.
