Zvartnots (Armenian: Զվարթնոց meaning celestial angels) is a town located in Armenian province of Armavir, about 10 km west from Yerevan, approximately half way to Echmiadzin.
Some sources claim that the Zvartnots cathedral is depicted upon Mount Ararat in one of frescoes of Sainte-Chapelle in Paris.
A drawing of the cathedral was depicted on the first issue of 100 AMD banknotes and its model can be seen in the history museum in Yerevan.

The Cathedral of Zvartnots' or the Echmiadzin Cathedral of St. Gregory the Illuminator was built in the VIIth century by the orders of Catholicos Nerses III.
The design of Zvartnots' is based upon a square cruciform plan containing four apses surrounded by the ring-like hall.
The triple-decker design of Zvartnots' Cathedral was emulated in Armenia and neighboring countries and has had a significant influence on Armenian architectural design in general throughout the succeeding centuries.

Zvartnots Airport is the main airport of Yerevan and the gateway to the Republic of Armenia.
The pavement of the 3,800 m long runway was rehabilitated in 1993 and the runway has a length and a load bearing capacity that enable it to handle the largest commercial aircraft today.

It--and Zvartnots Cathedral, 7 kilometers further east--deserve to be the last, since they represent the last, and greatest triumphs of Armenia's sacred architecture in the 7th century, and were both pivotal in promoting Christianity during the long Pagan Wars.
Lying half way between Echmiadzin and Zvartnots (which was still a pagan temple at the time), Hripsimeh was literally a fortress for Christians in the wilderness.
Following the plan of Echmiadzin (cruciform with semi-circular apses at the cardinal points, chapels on the diagonal points), the architects at Hripsimeh created a harmonious and elegant space, one of the earliest uses of placing the dome directly over the supporting walls.

Armenia’s air communication with the rest of the world has been complicated for the past three months by mysterious shortages of fuel which aviators blame on its sole government-connected supplier.
The grave lack of aviation kerosene at Yerevan’s Zvartnots international airports is forcing domestic and foreign airlines to make refueling stopovers or carry additional fuel on their flights to the Armenian capital.
According to Abrahamian, each plane taking off from Zvartnots is now given one metric ton of fuel, instead of the required 13-14 tons.

Arrived at Zvartnots International for the first time in September of 2005, at 5am - no direct connect hall linking airline to terminal, upon descending aircraft steps was surrounded by what looked like army soldiers and was told photography was forbidden.
At first impression, found airport a very unique shape, however structure was in terrible shape, with crumbling walls and bare lighting.
I would definately go through Zvartnots on my next trip without any hesitation, hoping it will have transformed and matured to an international class service facility.
