Zvolen (county) (in Latin: comitatus Zoliensis, in Hungarian Zólyom (vár)megye, in Slovak Zvolenský komitát/ Zvolenská stolica/ Zvolenská župa, in German Sohler Gespanschaft/Komitat Sohl) is the name of a historic administrative county (comitatus) of the Kingdom of Hungary.
The capital of the county was the castle of Pustý hrad near Zvolen, then from the late 15th century the Zvolen Castle and from the 1760s the town of Banská Bystrica.
Zvolen county arose as a Hungarian comitatus in the 12th century, when most parts of the territory were conquered by the Kingdom of Hungary, from a huge royal property (the Zvolen dominium).

The capitals of the county were the Hont Castle together with Ipeľské Predmostie, then from the 16th century onwards there was no permanent capital, and finally since early 19th century, the capital was Šahy (in Hungarian: Ipolyság).
The county arose in the 11th century by separation from the Nógrád county.
From 1552 to 1685, most of the county was part of the Ottoman Empire and belonged to the administrative unit called Nógrád sandjak.

Gemer is one of the oldest counties of the Kingdom of Hungary.
In 1918 (confirmed by the Treaty of Trianon 1920), most of the county became part of newly formed Czechoslovakia, except a very small region around Putnok, which became part of the Hungarian county Borsod-Gömör-Kishont (presently Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén).
During World War II, when Czechoslovakia was split temporarily, most of the county was occupied by Hungary under the First Vienna Award, and the Gömör-Kishont county was recreated.

High above Zvolen in the hills is a location of one of the oldest settlements in the Zvolen area The Pusty Castle.
While visiting Zvolen, I stopped by to see my friend and folklorist Katarina Kostialova, who after finishing her studies at University of Nitra works in the Zvolen's museum.
She told me about the evaluation of this year's work at the Pusty Hrad castle to be held in few days, so I decided to come and finally visit now preserved ruins of this once great and famous castle.
