Zweigelt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Zweigelt is a red wine grape variety developed in 1922, at the Federal Institute for Viticulture and Pomology at Klosterneuburg, Austria, by Fritz Zweigelt (who was later to become the director of this institute).
Zweigelt is said to combine some of the best qualities of its parents: winter hardiness (resistance to frost), late bud-break, and early ripening.
Zweigelt is also known as Rotburger (not to be confused with Rotberger), Klosterneuburg 71, Zweigeltrebe, and Blauer Zweigelt.

Catch some Okanagan Zs—Zweigelt, that is | Straight.com Vancouver
If only it wasn't named Zweigelt; as the penultimate entry in Jancis Robinson's other monumental work, The Oxford Companion to Wine (Oxford University Press, 1999), it prompted one editorialist to conclude the brief write-up with this observation: "The export fortunes of the variety may, oddly enough, be hampered by its originator's uncompromisingly Germanic surname.
It begins with a big purple blast of colour, mellows into a somewhat restrained aroma, gradually opening up to big and earthy berry flavours; the fruit is beautifully fragrant and ripe; the finish is deep and long and pillowy, but with lots of good acid backbone.
Here is a wine made from only one of Zweigelt's parents, and it has been, over several previous vintages, a hit with many wine lovers.

The Heinrich story is a modern day fairytale, whereby a small family owned winery that for generations had produced only simple, tasty wines for family and friends and sold the balance in bulk, abruptly changed direction and emerged with Gernot’s dynamic leadership as a tour de force in winemaking.
Zweigelt, a cross between the indigenous St.Laurent and a clone of Gamay, is Austria and Heinrich’s most renowned wine.
It is no wonder then that critics continue to proclaim the virtues of Zweigelt and sing the praises of Heinrich Gernot and his superlative wines.

 Zweigelt - Appellation America
This relatively recent cross of St-Laurent with Blaufrankisch displays the virtues of both parents: the body of St-Laurent and the acidic nature of Blaufrankisch.
Widely grown in Austria, where it was developed and is now that country’s most popular dark-skinned grape, Zweigelt ripens earlier than Blaufrankisch, but buds later than St. Laurent.
Zweigelt is said to be amongst the most cold-hardy (vinifera) varieties and its ability to create good red wines with some aging ability is catching the attention of cold climate growers outside of Eastern Europe.

Zweigelt, a red wine grape planted widely in Austria, is from a crossing of the Blaufrankisch and St.Laurent grapes, but has the personality of a full-bodied Syrah (AKA Shiraz).
Food and Wine Magazine described it as “dense, dark wines that somehow manage to come across as pleasantly weightless.” The Mitterjoch Zweigelt, from one of the oldest Zweigelt vineyards at the Braunstein winery, fits the profile perfectly: deep ruby in color with soft violet reflections.
It has fresh notes of wild cherry and is fat and charming on the palate.

Only a handful of Okanagan wineries grow Zweigelt, a major red variety in Austria (where it was developed in 1922) and almost nowhere else.
One of the knocks against it is that consumers can’t pronounce the name; one of Arrowleaf’s competitors makes do with Z on the label while another came up with Zeta.
That he now finds the latter more often than the former testifies to the dramatic improvement shown by BC winemaking in the past decade.

One part of the Zweigelt Rosé comes from grapes harvested in a state of middle ripeness, gently pressed like white wine (weiss gepresst), the second part is from highest quality Zweigelt grapes where we just use the must flowing out of the press before the pressing even starts.
Soft salmon pink, delicate fruit (raspberry, woodstrawberry and sour cherry), based on spicy slightly mineral flavours, soft mouthfilling texture, good acidity that is balanced by a touch of residual sugar and a quite impressive body with again fruity tones, good length and lively finish.
Thus Zweigelt Rosé is not only a perfect aperitif and summer wine but also a versatile companion to food where all too up forward fruit too racy acidity, too much tannin or alcohol fail.

Although a hearty red might normally be too much for veal, the combination of robust flavors in the ossobuco and the fruity nature of the Zweigelt made the match come out just right.
