  Newmoth
In April and May of both 2001 and 2002, a homeowner in the City of Fairfax, Fairfax County, Virginia, noticed a large infestation of larvae on her ornamental Euonymus (Celastraceae); the larvae were causing significant defoliation of the plants.
Because Eric was unable to identify the family of these unusual moths, he forwarded the adults to SEL in December 2002.

Lepidoptera - Zygaenoidea - Zygaenidae - Zygaeninae @ Nature Photography by PHO
The Zygaenidae family - has about 1000 known species worldwide which are put into 3 sub-families (Zygaeninae, Procridinae and Chalcosiinae).
Zygaeninae is known as the "real" Burnets with red blood-like spots on the forewings.
That should make the task easier one might think, but they all look very similar and a reliable determination is only possible thru genitalia preparation.

The information presented in this report will be valuable to ornamental landscapers, local and state pest control managers, and action agencies such as APHIS whose task is to exclude invasive pests at U.S. ports-of-entry.
Technical Abstract: We report the first North American records of Pryeria sinica Moore (Lepidoptera: Zygaenidae) in Fairfax, Virginia, where it is causing considerable damage to ornamental Euonymus.
We suspect that the pathway for its introduction into the U.S. was via nursery stock from the Far East.

 Dispersionsdynamik von Rotwidderchen
Dispersal dynamics of burnet moths (Insecta, Lepidoptera, Zygaenidae) among isolated limestone grasslands in southern Germany with special reference to nature conservation aspects
Detailed mapping of burnet moth (Zygaena spp.) habitats in an area covering 30 square km in the Swabian Alb hill country near Blaubeuren, southern Germany, conducted in 1993-1994 revealed, that suitable habitats for the species occur in isolated patches, which are only 0,14 up to 3,2ha in size, and are dispersed throughout the study area.
The future integration of quarries after closure would allow the formation of a longitudinal habitat network along the southern rim of the Swabian Alb in order to stabilize the habitat network on a larger spatial scale.
