Zygnematales - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Zygnematales are an order of green algae, comprising several thousand different species in genera such as the well-known Zygnema and Spirogyra.
The only other group of conjugating algae are the desmids, which live as individual cells often striking for their symmetrical appearance.
The two orders are definitely close relatives, and sometimes the desmids are included among the Zygnematales, or the two are grouped in their own division (Gamophyta).

Spirogyra and Zygnema are the best-known members of the order, and because of the beauty of these organisms when seen under a microscope, they are commonly used in biology classes as examples of the "green algae".
However, the Zygnematales are not representative of the green algae in general, and have many unusual features which suggest a closer relationship to the plants than to the other green algae.
Almost all species of Zygnematales live in freshwater environments, where they are important as primary producers.

The Zygnematales are either unbranched filaments (although a few species form one or a few branches early in development while they are forming a holdfast) or unicells.
There is reason to believe that the unicellular members of the Zygnematales are derived from filamentous ancestors.
The Zygnematales are a diverse and ecologically important group.

The orders outside the Chlorophyta are often grouped as the division Charophyta, which is (Click link for more info and facts about paraphyletic) paraphyletic to higher plants, together comprising the Streptophyta.
Sometimes the Charophyta is restricted to the Charales, and a division Gamophyta is introduced for the Zygnematales and Desmidales.
In older systems the Chlorophyta may be taken to include all the green algae, but taken as above they appear to form a monophyletic group.
