Topic: Zygomatic arch

Gray, Henry. 1918. Anatomy of the Human Body. Page 183
The squamosal suture arches backward from the pterion and connects the temporal squama with the lower border of the parietal: this suture is continuous behind with the short, nearly horizontal parietomastoid suture, which unites the mastoid process of the temporal with the region of the mastoid angle of the parietal.
The zygomatic arch is formed by the zygomatic process of the temporal and the temporal process of the zygomatic, the two being united by an oblique suture; the tendon of the Temporalis passes medial to the arch to gain insertion into the coronoid process of the mandible.
The zygomatic process of the temporal arises by two roots, an anterior, directed inward in front of the mandibular fossa, where it expands to form the articular tubercle, and a posterior, which runs backward above the external acoustic meatus and is continuous with the supramastoid crest.

II. Osteology. 5b. 4. The Zygomatic Bone. Gray, Henry. 1918. Anatomy of the Human Body.
The zygomatic bone is small and quadrangular, and is situated at the upper and lateral part of the face: it forms the prominence of the cheek, part of the lateral wall and floor of the orbit, and parts of the temporal and infratemporal fossæ (Fig.
Near the center of this surface is the zygomaticotemporal foramen for the transmission of the zygomaticotemporal nerve.
The structures attached to this tubercle are: (1) the check ligament of the Rectus lateralis; (2) the lateral end of the aponeurosis of the Levator palpebræ superioris; (3) the suspensory ligament of the eye (Lockwood); and (4) the lateral extremities of the superior and inferior tarsi.

Zygomatic complex fractures are also termed "tripod" fractures because they are breaks along the zygomaticofrontal, zygomaticomaxillary junction (infraorbital rim and anterior sinus wall), and the zygomatic arch.
Isolated zygomatic arch fractures are usually due to a focused blow, such as an elbow or a hardball, directly to the mid-arch.
Arch fractures can be approached through a limited lateral brow incision with blunt dissection down to the supraperiosteal plane, or via a Gillies' (2.5-mm oblique temporal hairline) incision, avoiding the superficial temporal artery.

The periosteum must be released at least to the mid-point of the arch, and optimally to the lateral one-third junction of the arch adjacent to the zygomatic temporal suture.
After the periosteum is lifted off the arch, you’ll see the aponeurosis of the masseteric muscle, identifying it as a striated fibrous band emanating from the inferior edge of the zygomatic arch (See Figure 2).
The periosteal attachments over the arch and the attachments of the masseteric aponeurosis and ligaments on the vertical medial edge of the masseteric fascia are critical in the success or failure of the surgery.

This invention relates to a new and improved means and method for avoiding reflection into the eyes of incident light rays from the skin areas on the zygomatic arches along the lower side of the orbit, such areas being often referred to as the cheekbones.
The present invention also provides a method of absorbing incident light from the zygomatic arch skin area along the lower side of the orbit, and comprising applying a light absorbing pliable sheet material patch to such skin area, and adhesively attaching the patch to such skin area.

This arched bone allows muscle formation to adhere to it and it is this muscle that joins the jaws and head together and gives them strength.

This chiseling also contributes to keeping the Zygomatic arch in closer to the head as is desired, giving the cheeks a flat appearance and preventing excessive head width.

Zygomatic arch, the arch of bone beneath the orbit, formed in most mammals by the union of the malar, or jugal, with the zygomatic process of the temporal bone.
In the lower vertebrates other bones may help to form it, and there may be two arches on each side of the skull, as in some reptiles.
Zygomatic process, a process of the temporal or squamosal bone helping to form the zygomatic arch.
