In Zygoptera the two pairs of wings are almost exactly equal in shape, size and venation.
Carle and Wighton (1990) derived a polyphyletic Zygoptera by convergent reduction in the wing veins from anisopteran ancestors.
The monophyly of the Zygoptera is supported by six characters, the two most important being the transverse head structure and the widely separated eyes, considered as derived characters.

 Odonata: Dragonflies and Damselflies
The order Odonata ("toothed ones") includes some of the most ancient and beautiful insects that ever roamed Earth, as well as some of the largest flying invertebrates ever to have lived.
While both dragonflies and damselflies belong to the Odonata and share many common features, then are a number of noticeable differences as well.
Zygoptera copulate while perched, sometimes flying to a new perch.

 The European Odonates(Dragonflies and Damselflies)
The difference between Anisoptera and Zygoptera is clearly visible in the shapes of the wings: Zygoptera have hind wings shaped equally to the front wings, with only two antenodal crossveins (veins perpendicular to the costa, situated at the front of each wing).
Male Zygoptera have two pairs of anal appendages: the upper appendages (appendices superiores) and the lower appendages (appendices inferiores).
The shape of the appendages of a species is typical for that species and corresponds with the shape of the female’s prothorax (Zygoptera), which prevents bastardising.

Thrust is generated both by the movement of the wing through the air and by the twisting of the wing (supination/pronation) at the ends of each stroke.
A remaining conundrum is the libellulid dragonflies that perch with their wings low, pointed well forward, and twisted to be near vertical.

 Dragonflies and Damselflies (Insecta: Odonata)
Odonata was until recently composed of three suborders: Anisoptera, commonly known as dragonflies; Zygoptera, commonly known as damselflies; and Anisozyoptera, as the name denotes, a morphological composite of the previous two suborders.
To facilitate the discussion of North American odonates it is useful to use the names Zygoptera and Anisoptera when discussing differences between the damselflies and dragonflies, as there are no extant Anisozygoptera in North America.

Today, there are about 5,000 species grouped into three extant suborders: Zygoptera - damselflies (Figure 1); Anisoptera - dragonflies (Figure 2); and Anisozygoptera, a small suborder of two Asian species morphologically intermediate to the former two groups.
Two of the world's three suborders - Anisoptera and Zygoptera - are found in Michigan.
Larvae of almost all species are aquatic, respiring by means of gills (internal with Anisopera, external with Zygoptera, the later that may also cutaneously respire).
