  Zyriab - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Zyriab (789- 857) (Zorab in Kurdish) was a poet and musician.
He moved to Córdoba in southern Spain and was accepted as court musician in the court of Abd al-Rahman II of the Umayyad Dynasty (822-52).
Zyriab is thought to have codified the disparate elements of Arab poetic traditions of qasidah, mwashah and zajal.

According to some sources, Zyriab was a liberated fl slave from the 9th century Baghdad court of Haroun al-Rashid [2].
Zyriab is thought to have codified the disparate elements of Arab poetic traditions of qasidah, mwashah and zajal.[5] The celebrated ex-Baghdad Abbasid courts' singer, musician, cook, gourmand, fashion arbiter who fled to Andalusia was the first to introduce New Year festival to Spain and thence to Europe.

The oud is very famous in Arab countries due to the fact that it's easy to improvise on the oud unlike other instruments which either require accompaniment or are too complex to play.
The oud was introduced into Europe by Zyriab, where it evolved into the lute and ultimately the guitar which we know today.
Well known oud players include Munir Bashir, Farid al-Atrache, and Rabih Abou-Khalil.
