Christine Lee Zilka: The Unlimited Mood: ZYZZYVA   (Site not responding. Last check: )
And now, I bring to your attention, ZYZZYVA (all caps, in italics, pronounced "zee-zee-vuh.") I always get asked "How the hell do you pronounce that?" and then inevitably, even after I've explained, it gets mispronounced, so that it sounds like I have been published in a multitude of literary journals starting with the "Z" sound.
ZYZZYVA will always hold a tender place in my heart as a writer and reader.
For you snobs, ZYZZYVA has published a fair share of stories that later appeared in the "Best American Short Stories" anthology--most recently, Catherine Brady's "Written in Stone." (unless they've got something impending in the 2006 BASS).

Zyzzyva is another great freeware program for studying words.
I haven't figure out how to generate lists that include one letter OR another letter, such as words that contain either J, Q, X, or Z. But I'm probably missing something there.
Overall, I think Zyzzyva will be my study program of choice from here on out.

Public art, the Mission Bay way / UCSF gets it right at its new campus
As reminder that it does, and that the magazine -- Zyzzyva -- makes an unusual amount of space in its pages for visual art, 871 Fine Arts (49 Geary St., 415-543-5812) has dedicated a small but dense show to the periodical.
A zyzzyva is weevil, the sort of critter known for being hard to eradicate.
The magazine assumed the name partly because it is the last word in the dictionary -- perhaps on the same principle as AAAAA Plumbing in the Yellow Pages -- but the hard-to-eradicate part proves to have been more telling.

zyzzyva - alphaDictionary * Free English On-line Dictionary
Let's say someone calls you an insignificant bug; you now have a retort that trumps their term hand over fist: "I consider that a compliment coming from a zyzzyva like you." When they look it up they will find that it is the least known bug on earth and the lowest thing in the dictionary.
It is common to say that it comes from New Latin Zyzzyva, genus name, probably from Zyzza, former genus of leafhoppers.
The reason for the mystery of this word's origin is probably that it is an onomatopoetic word based on the sound bugs make, especially beetles, when they fly.
