 Comparative Placentation
Alouatta is the most widely distributed genus "of neotropical primates, with a geographic range extending from Mexico to northern Argentina" (Lima and Seuanez, 1991).
Many of the latter, however, also had four vessels in their cord, 2 arteries and 2 veins, as is shown for the single Alouatta seniculus sara cord available to me. It is similar in that respect to the umbilical cord of spider monkeys (see chapter on Ateles), except that there is no patent allantoic duct.

Digimorph - Alouatta seniculus (red howler monkey)
Alouatta seniculus, the red howler, is a South American or New World monkey.
Alouatta seniculus is one of the smaller atelines with males and females averaging 6,690 g and 5,210 g respectively (Fleagle, 1999).
Alouatta is a member of the Atelinae, a group of large-bodied arboreal platyrrhines that includes the spider monkeys, woolly monkeys, and woolly spider monkeys.

The mantled howler monkey (alouatta palliata) is currently on the lower risk status according to the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) guidelines.
The alouatta palliata is an arboreal animal, which means that they are adapted to a life in trees.
Alouatta palliata have long colons and a slow passage rate of food through their intestines to permit sufficient fermentation by celluloytic microorganisms.

Alouatta seniculus also improve their digestive efficiency by feeding primarily on tender young leaves and on some species of leaves that are unusually nutritious.
Alouatta seniculus spend almost their entire lives near the top canopy of the forest, where such leaves are most abundant (Devore, 1965) (MacDonald,1985).
Alouatta seniculus lives strictly in South America, ranging as far north as Columbia and Venezuela, and as south as Bolivia and Amazonian Brazil (Nowak, 1991).

The particular interests of this research program is to determine the hormonal profiles for males and females in social groups of howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata and A. pigra) and of spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) existing in large and protected tracts of forest as well as in landscapes with different degrees of fragmentation.
Both the mantled howler monkey (Alouatta palliata) and the fl howler monkey (Alouatta pigra) of the Mesoamerican region are considered to be endangered species in the list of CITES with the pressure mostly coming from tropical rainforest destruction and fragmentation and the pet traffick.

REPRODUCTIVE STATUS OF A FRAGMENTED POPULATION OF HOWLER MONKEYS (ALOUATTA PALLIATA)
In general, despite certain doubts is admitted that howler monkeys from Mexico corresponds to a particular subspecies named A. palliata mexicana, which have their own differential characteristics and represents one of the most northern distributions of the genus (referencies, qui ha descrit aquesta subespecie?), but few attention has been paid to possible reproductive particularities.
Other howler species, Alouatta seniculus in Venezuela (Crockett & Rudran, 1987a) reported that the time of year with fewer births is around the peak of new leaves and fruits, and peak of critical nutrient availability is coincident with weaning offspring.
In conclusion, the seasonality of births in Alouatta seems to be more related to local climatic seasonality and the related quality of available food.

Brown howlers (Alouatta fusca) are endemic to the coastal Atlantic forest of eastern and southeastern Brazil and northeastern Argentina, with two subspecies: A. f.
Chromosome spreads were photographed for karyotyping, and the autosomes were divided into two groups on the basis of their morphological attributes (biarmed or acrocentric) and homologue pairs were arranged within each group in decreasing size.
NOR staining showed four small chromosomes marked in the proximal region of the long arm in 87% of the analyzed cells (Figure 4); in the rest, the number of marked chromosomes was two or three.

 Ometepe Biological Station
However, despite the apparent demographic robusticity of Alouatta, some species and subspecies of howling monkeys are critically endangered, one species, Alouatta palliata is now extinct in El Salvador and their population density remains undetermined in countries such as Nicaragua (where field work was halted during 20+ years of political upheaval).
The projects reported in this symposium (Behavioral Ecology and Conservation Status of Primate Populations in Nicaragua) on the island of Ometepe in Nicaragua are the first to evaluate the ecology and conservation status of the mantled howling monkey in this country since the return of political stability.
PCR techniques were utilized to examine 11 microsatellite loci, which had been previously identified for Alouatta palliata and Saimiri (Ellsworth and Hoelzer 1998, Witte and Rogers 1999).
