 The Annelids (Phylum Annelida)
The Annelida are a medium sized phylum of more than 9,000 species of worms.
The Phylum Annelida is divided into 3 classes, one of which the Clitellata could really be called a Superclass, it contains three subclasses, the Oligochaeta, the Branchiobdella and the Hirundinea.
Like the classification of all living things the classification of the Annelida is under revision by experts and the current beliefs of scientists are only theories not facts, different schemes may be put forward as we acquire more knowledge.

 Phylum Annelida
The phylum Annelida is made up of segmented worms, numbering about 15,000 species.
Therefore, because a segmented body is advantageous, it evolved twice, with the protosomes, as shown by phyla Annelida and Arthropoda, and again in the deuterosomes, as shown by phylum Chordata.
Other hallmarks of the annelids are soft bodies that are round in cross section, repetition of organs in the segemented parts, and a body that is much longer than it is wide.

In particular, the Annelida, commonly called segmented worms, has been central to debates on the role of segmentation in animal evolution.
Recent evidence suggests that several non-segmented or partially segmented worm taxa, that were previously regarded as separate phyla, are within the annelid radiation.
The proposed work has two goals: 1) Genomic approaches will be used to reconstruct the early phylogenetic events of the "Annelida", which includes several previously recognized phyla, and 2) Functional genomic techniques will be used to characterize the developmental mechanisms employed in segmentation in several key lineages.

The common earthworm (for example, the genus Lumbricus) and the worms in the genus Amphitrite are both in the Phylum Annelida (segmented worms).
However, they are in different classes - earthworms are in the class Oligochaeta, while Amphitrite are in the class Polychaeta.
