Aqtau - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Aqtau or Aktau (Kazakh: Ақтау Aqtau; Russian: Актау Aktau) is a city in Kazakhstan and a seaport on the Caspian Sea.
Because Aqtau was first a military city, its streets have no names and all addresses in Aqtau consist of three numbers: the block number, the building number and the apartment/suite/room number.
The city was renamed Aqtau in 1992 after Kazakhstan got its independence from the USSR.

 Lonely Planet's Guide to Kazakstan
Stuck between the desert and the Caspian Sea, with all its water derived from desalination plants, the town of Aqtau in western Kazakstan is one of the world's great 'why-on-earth-does-anyone-live-here?' places.
It didn't exist at all until 1963 when Soviet architects began to lay out a model town of wide, straight streets and apartment blocks after uranium deposits were found nearby.
Aqtau's improbability is enhanced by the fact that it's hundreds of kilometres from any other town and not linked to anywhere by decent roads (supplies are mainly freighted in by air).

Despite the recent grassroots success, Atakhanova said that nuclear tensions remain and that the import of nuclear waste into Kazakhstan was likely postponed rather than cancelled.
