  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Ascetical Theology
Ascetics, as a branch of theology, may be briefly defined as the scientific exposition of Christian asceticism.
Ascetics proves the necessity of prayer (2 Corinthians 3:5) and teaches the mode of praying with spiritual profit; it justifies vocal prayers and teaches the art of meditating according to the various methods of St. Peter of Alcantara, of St. Ignatius, and other saints, especially the "tres modi orandi" of St. Ignatius.
Ascetical theology, which has been separated from moral theology and mysticism, has for its subject-matter the striving after Christian perfection; it shows how Christian perfection may be attained by earnestly exercising and schooling the will, using the specified means both to avoid the dangers and allurements of sin and to practise virtue with greater intensity.

 theology
Theology generally assumes the truth of at least some religious beliefs and is therefore often distinguished from the philosophy of religion, which does not presume the truth of any religious beliefs.
To the extent that theology relies upon the religious practitioners' own terms, it is likely to be explored by those who have some kind of commitment to those terms: i.e., by those who are either practitioners of the religion, or sympathisers.
More generally, however, many theologians consider that, because the topics considered in theology touch on the theologians' deepest commitments and beliefs, it is impossible to study theology with complete detachment: the study of theology is "self-involving" in a way that makes some kinds of objectivity difficult.

The Three Ages of the Interior Life - Part 1
Spiritual theology, like every science, ought to consider the interior life as such, and not in a given individual in the midst of rather unfavorable given circumstances.
Spiritual theology, while noting the exceptions that may arise from the absence of a given condition, ought especially to establish the higher laws of the full development of the life of grace as such, and the proximate disposition to receive the beatific vision immediately in a fully purified soul.
Thus the life of grace must be defined by eternal life of which it is the seed; and then the proximate and perfect disposition to receive the beatific vision immediately is in the normal way of sanctity.

In the East, ascetic trends were enhanced by two factors: first of all, by the rise of monasticism, a movement which essentially called for the abandonment of public life in its quest for holiness, and secondly by the development of Neoplatonic ideas in the writings of the Eastern Fathers, the Cappadocians in particular.
The principal aim of this school of thought was to integrate the truths of reason with those of revelation, to harmonize, in other words, the philosophical insights of Aristotle with the sapience of Augustine, the chief theological mentor of the age.
In the early part of the twentieth century this discipline was called "spiritual theology" and the contours of the field were aptly expressed in the works of Pierre Pourrat and Adolphe Tanquerey.
