Asynchronous execution of federated queries in WebSphere Federation Server V9.1
Asynchrony is achieved by adding operators to the execution plan that enable remote queries to be initiated and processed independently.
The introduction of asynchrony into federated query plans is enabled by the database manager configuration parameter and may be further limited at the package level by the prep/bind options and at a connection level by special register.
Asynchrony must be enabled using one of the controls described in the Expressing resource limitations and its effects on asynchrony section.

In this case, hatching asynchrony is not adaptive, but is the consequence of a trade-off between selective pressures that favor early incubation and selective pressures that favor synchronous hatching.
The egg viability hypothesis suggests that hatching asynchrony is imposed by a physiological constraint and represents a potential cost to the parents in terms of lowered reproductive success.

Journal of Vision - Perceptual asynchrony: Modularity of consciousness or object updating?, by Enns & Oriet   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Perceptual asynchrony occurs when observers view rapidly cycling displays in which the alternation in one attribute (e.g., vertical versus horizontal orientation) is asynchronous with alternation in another attribute (e.g., red versus blue color).
Contrary to this interpretation, we show that perceptual asynchrony is a natural consequence of redirecting attention from a "defining" attribute to a "report" attribute.
These findings suggest that perceptual asynchrony is not a measure of the time needed for specific brain modules to become conscious, but is instead an index of the time consuming process of updating dynamic object representations.

In obligate siblicide, which occurs even when food supplies are abundant, the second egg serves as insurance against loss of the first egg from infertility, predation, or damage, rather than as a means of rearing two chicks.
Asynchronous hatching also can be interpreted for some insectivorous species as an adaptation to "speed up" hatching so that at least some of the nestlings can capitalize on rapidly (but unpredictably) peaking food resources (such as outbreaks of forest caterpillars).
This "new view" of the adaptive significance of hatching asynchrony helps to explain the increasing egg weight often seen from first to last egg laid among many asynchronously hatching passerines.

A Study of Ventricular Asynchrony in Patients of Dilated Cardiomyopathy with Varying QRS duration and Patients of Broad ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The aim of this study was to understand the prevalence of inter- and intraventricular asynchrony in a broad spectrum patients of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) with varying QRS duration including patients with broad QRS and normal left ventricular (LV) function.
A total of 7 patients (53.6%) had ventricular asynchrony, [3 (23%) interventricular, 3 (23%) intraventricular and 1 (7.6%) combined] in Group I as against a total of 9 (81%) [7 (63%) interventricular and 2 (18%) combined] in Group II.
The asynchrony probably relates more to LV function than to the QRS duration per se, which could modify the indications of biventricular pacing in such patients.

mnot’s Web log: Asynchrony: There Is No Spoon
This pushes asynchrony to the application itself, by surfacing the different parties as different resources; this gives a lot of flexibility and power to application designers, but requires the client to be reachable by the server; a difficult task when it’s mobile or behind a firewall.
All of this synchronous behaviour is abstracted out to a one-way message, as far as users are concerned, but that’s only because their software has chosen to hide this from them (mostly; how many times do you click “get new mail” in a day?).
The abstraction that HTTP provides, on the other hand, requires the application to be architected to exhibit “real” asynchrony; you have to model it as an update of state to a separate resource.

Journal of Vision - MEG responses for color-motion asynchrony, by Amano, Nihida, & Takeda   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
When an upward motion of green pattern and a downward motion of red pattern are alternated at 2Hz, changes in motion direction appear to be delayed relative to color changes by about 100 ms.
Moutoussis and Zeki (1997) proposed that the apparent asynchrony reflects the delayed neural processing of motion relative to that of color.
From these and other results, they hypothesized that the perception of the relative time of events is based on the relationship between representations of the temporal pattern of salient features (time markers), and the asynchrony could be ascribed to the difficulty in detecting the direction reversals for rapid alternations.
