  Audio Recording
Today's audio productions have seized on the vast creative resources in audio technology to create recordings which defy our sense of a recording faithfully reproducing a live performance.
Once an audio signal is stored as digital data, the storage media has no effect on the quality of sound.
As the first link in the audio chain, a microphone acts as a kind of measuring device which outputs a small, continuously varying AC voltage in response to the changes in atmospheric pressure caused by any sound disturbance.

 Axis Communications - Audio
Audio can easily be integrated into network video as the network can carry any type of data, which reduces the need for extra cabling -- as opposed to analog systems where an audio cable must be installed from endpoint to endpoint.
Audio can also be used in network cameras or video servers as an independent detection method, which triggers video recordings and alarms when audio levels above a certain threshold are detected.
When using Axis network cameras, there are several audio modes to choose from: simplex (one way: only from client or from camera), half duplex (audio can be sent from both the client and the camera but only one direction at a time), and duplex mode (simultaneous two-way audio).

 Digital Audio Storage Table
The size of an audio file is determined by two factors, the audio compression format and the bit rate that have been used to encode the audio file.
The most important to remember is that higher bit rates leads to larger file sizes but also to higher audio quality.
The standard bit rate for the MP3 audio format is 128 Kbps, for the AAC audio format is 96 Kbps and for the WMA audio format is 64 Kbps.

Most electrical audio signals are also analog; the voltage in a cable varies smoothly in a way that mimics the changing air pressure of the sound represented by the signal.
In fact, the signal's changing voltage is analogous to the changing pressure of the sound it represents, hence the term analog audio.
In this process, the digital-audio data is compressed to reduce storage requirements by as much as 4:1 or 5:1.

However, the fact that high-quality storage is still difficult and expensive, as well as the very high commercial stakes involved in networked delivery of high-quality audio and video to home users, all put a rather different slant on these familiar issues.
However, editing a piece of audio or video for content, cutting out pauses or entire sections of the video that will not be used, is a necessary prerequisite for creating any kind of deliverable user version, and represents a large investment of time which needs to be taken into account when creating masters.
In the case of all audio and moving image material, whether it is in analog or digital form, projects should carefully consider the advantages of outsourcing digitization.

IASA Guidelines on the Production and Preservation of Digital Audio Objects   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The integration of audio into data systems, the development of appropriate standards, and the wide acceptance of digital audio delivery mechanisms have replaced all other media to such an extent that there is little choice for sound preservation except digital storage approaches.
However, the processes of converting analogue audio to digital, transferring to storage systems, of managing and maintaining the audio data, providing access and ensuring the integrity of the stored information, present a new range of risks that must be managed to ensure that the benefits of digital preservation and archiving are realised.
Any process of digitisation is selective, the audio content itself supplies more information to potential users than is contained in the intended signal and the standards of analogue to digital conversion fix the limits of the resolution of the audio permanently and, unless carefully undertaken, partially.

Digital audio is stored in binary, allowing degraded data to still be interpreted as the same as the original data, for reasons described above.
