On 20 July the seventh anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing, the Viking 1 lander separated from the orbiter and touched down on the Chryse Planitia region, becoming the first spacecraft to successfully land on the surface of Mars.
During World War I, he was, on 31 August 1915, the first ace to be killed in aerial combat, shot down by a German two-seater piloted by his former student, Unteroffizier Kandulski.

Originally larger than Geraldton, a combination of being built on a floodplain and having the railroad bypass it, caused it to become home for only ~100 people where Geraldton now has >25000 (largest town in WA outside of the Perth area).
I found an ok price on the net to fly from Perth to San Francisco and brought a printout to Traveland travel agency where Sarah was able to beat that price again.
So, plan from here is to fly from Perth to San Francisco on 23 August with broken frame and return with replacement bicycle on 30 August.

PCVs take very small steps that are important to the people they touch, but our government needs to start considering the impact of other policies on developing nations.
Of course in the near term, from the view of a developing country potential farmer, the U.S. money spent on PCVs' 2 year education is more than offset by what Congress spends on farm subsidies, but hopefully the direct impact of the protectionist policies have a shorter duration than the 2-way education does.

 The US fires approximately 60 missiles at six training camps in Afghanistan and about 20 missiles at a pharmaceutical factory in Khartoum, Sudan in retaliation for the US embassy bombings.
The New York Times reports that the training camps recently attacked by the US (see August 20, 1998) were actually built years before by the US and its allies.
The US and Saudi Arabia gave the Afghans between $6 billion and $40 billion to fight the Soviets in the 1980's (see December 26, 1979).
