Aulos - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Female aulos-players were a fixture of Greek drinking parties, and male and female aulos players often doubled as prostitutes.
The aulos accompanied a wide range of Greek activities: it was present at sacrifices, dramas and even wrestling matches, for the broad jump, the discus throw, sailor's dances on triremes.
This tale was a warning against committing the sin of "hubris", or overweening pride, in that Marsyas thought he might win against a god.

The principle woodwind of Classical antiquity is the aulos, consisting of a pair of cylindrical pipes with double reed mouthpieces.
Originally made of reed stems, wood, or bone, at the Hellenistic age it became a refined instrument with an ivory core covered by a delicate mechanism of bronze or silver sliders and turning sleeves, which enabled the player to control a considerable number of finger holes.
In this passage of the composition, performed at Delphi in 128 BC, the accompanying aulos is mentioned, and the vocal melody, whose score is preserved, mimicks the typical undulating, largely conjunct, motion of this instrument.

Janet Baker’s vocal entrance at the beginning of the fourth movement and the chorale, the outright thunder of the fff tutti passages -- horns, drums, tympani -- were enough to satisfy the worst of the classical music lease-breakers.

I know its a little more ancient than subjects normally discussed here, but i was sure someone could help me track down references to the ancient greek double flute, called the aulos?
It appears to be two pipes played simultaneously (one in each hand, both in mouth, spread sideways, so it looks like the 2 long sides of a triangle, if that makes sense).
Also, is there any history of a double flute or similar from a later period - most of the early greek instruments have survived in one form or another, did the aulos develop in its 2 pipe form?
