After completing Central Park, Olmsted served as Executive Secretary of the U.S. Sanitary Commission, a precursor to the Red Cross in Washington D.C. which tended to the wounded during the Civil War.
Olmsted not only created city parks in many cities around the country, he also conceived of entire systems of parks and interconnecting parkways which connected certain cities to green spaces.
An example of the scale on which Olmsted worked is one of the largest pieces of his work, the park system designed for Buffalo, New York.

The 359.72-acre Branch Brook Park was the first, and largest, park constructed by the Fredrick Law Olmsted firm as part of the county’s park system, in 1895.
In 2005, the restoration of the Park Avenue Bridge was completed, and entrance enhancements, new fencing and landscaping along Clifton Avenue, as well as a major improvement project along Lake Street, have made the park more inviting to the public, a prepared statement from the county states.
However, over the years, she said, that motivation diminished, and parks transformed from places you went to relax and enjoy open space, to sections of the city to be avoided because they were dangerous.
