Breakbeat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Breakbeat (sometimes breakbeats or breaks) is a term used to describe a collection of sub-genres of electronic music, usually characterized by the use of a non-straighted 4/4 drum pattern (as opposed to the steady beat of house or trance).
The hardcore scene then diverged with one of the main offshoots being jungle music which had a darker sound and focused more on developing the use of complex breaks within its tracks.
Breakbeat (or funky breakbeat) may also refer to the music of bands such as Breakestra, who play funk and soul music with an emphasis on the elements that would become popular in hip-hop and later breaks-based music.

Breakbeat hardcore - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Breakbeat hardcore (popularly known as rave music, originally referred to as simply hardcore in the United Kingdom, with old school hardcore a common term in the 21st century) is a style of electronic music that primarily uses breakbeats for its rhythm lines.
Hardcore emerged as an d irreverent response to the soothing, soulful direction that techno had taken in the early iterations of trance and deep house.
Since the mid-2000s, several new record labels have appeared that are dedicated to the development of breakbeat hardcore, with the aim of recreating the sound and vibe of the early 1990s.

Breakbeat hardcore was originally referred to a simply hardcore by ravers in England.
The name happy hardcore should not be confused with other things that are also referred to as happy hardcore, as that term is much shared (and overused) across the world to describe different sounding things that have their own development.
In England, hardcore was the terminology used to describe their breakbeat driven rave music style of the early 1990s, with happy being used to distinguish the happier variant of this breakbeat hardcore music, thus happy hardcore (i.e.

Breakbeat can almost be defined as a non 4/4 (4 to the floor) rhythm, it's syncopated, polyrhythmic and emerged in early hip hop and US dance (Frankie Bones).
Hardcore was central to raving, a mutation of techno and acid house.
By 1990 they were releasing tracks that were pushing boundaries with mixes of hip hop and house sounds but it was Mr Kirk's Nightmare that established their credentials in hardcore breakbeat.

 What is Happy Hardcore?
In the early 90s, the predominant form of rave music was known as hardcore.
Jungle has far much more emphasis on the breakbeat, with it constantly moving and changing, while Happy Hardcore has more emphasis on the stuff on top and has a four on the floor kick drum.
Initially Happy Hardcore and Jungle DJs would play side by side, but this has become less and less common - whether this is good or bad depends on who you speak to.

Breakbeat (breakbeats or breaks), are a collection of sub-genres of electronic music, chiefly exemplified by drum and bass and jungle, usually characterized by a non-straighted 4/4 drum pattern (as opposed to the steady beat of house or trance).
In recent times, the term breakbeat has become synonymous for many with the genre of breaks music (sometimes known as nu skool breaks), which has become very popular within the global dance music scene, with DJs from a variety of genres, such as house and techno, working breaks tracks into their sets.
Happy hardcore evolved from rave music around 1991—1993, as the original house music-based rave became faster and began to include breakbeats, evolving into breakbeat hardcore.

After breakbeat was truly embedded within Rave culture, the UK (England specifically) gave it it's own slant, and along came Hardcore Breakbeat which dominated the scene from 91-93 - good examples of the sound being Johnny L's 'Hurt You So', Top Buzz's 'Living In Darkness', and NRG's 'I Need Your Love'.
It's a real shame - although Happy Hardcore is far from the good old early days of Luna C, Force and Evolution, Citadel of Kaos, etc, it IS the only true form of 'Rave' music left in the world IMO, and it will breathe it's last with all the big events dying off.
The only real form of Breakbeat left is Drum and Bass, which is really a 'club' music now - it's moved far from it's roots, IMO it's now bland, emotionless, and formulaic having abandoned the things that made it special in the first place.

Introduction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Raving was about listening to hardcore breakbeat music while going absolutely crazy with other people who were interested in pushing limits and creating a wicked vibe.
The darker breakbeat stuff came to be known as 'jungle,' and later, 'drum and bass' and the happier breakbeat became '4-beat' or 'happy hardcore'.
And though both happy hardcore and the Rave scene have changed in uncountable ways, we think that there's still one thing that's important to keep in mind: Raves and happy hardcore should still be about pushing limits, going nuts to good music and having an absolute blast.
