Burhou was a Trinity House workboat originally built for the Admiralty in 1945 by James Martin & Sons, Granton, Edinburgh, and taken on by TH in 1948.
“Burhou was purchased in 1948 and was in service in the Channel Islands, stationed at Alderney from 1948 to 1972, part of her duty being the relief of the Casquets Lighthouse.
“With the advent of helicopter reliefs, THL Burhou transferred to Cowes in 1972 and was used as a workboat in The Solent until 1974.

The complex courting and greeting ceremonies of the Gannets can be studied from here; birds are continually arriving with fish for their young and to take their turn at the nest.
Although Burhou is a protected area and landing is not permitted at this time, Puffins can be seen from the two round-island boats, the Lady Maris of Braye and the Voyager.
Both boats go close to the island of Burhou, giving good views of Puffins, and both visit the Gannet colony on the Garden Rocks, giving very close and spectacular views.

The earliest reference to birds on Burhou which I have found is given by an engraving published by Andrew and Sons about 1830, showing "The Petiel, or Sheerwater, from the Isle of Burhou, near Alderney".
Burhou is an important breeding ground for seabirds.
Some years ago the States of Alderney declared Burhou to be a bird sanctuary and forbade landing on the island during the breeding season from 23rd March to 23rd July.

The vast array of habitats and the species that exist within the site thrive on the nourishment provided by these tidal races, whilst at the same time struggling to maintain their place in waters that can surge up to and beyond six nautical knots.
Lying long and low on the horizon Burhou is the largest islet within the site and is home to a wide range of sea birds, including the picturesque puffin and the secretive storm petrel.
To the north west of Burhou lies the Renonquet reef which is a popular haunt for the Atlantic grey seal.

 Burhou Island
Burhou lies to the NNWest of the Channel Island of Alderney about one mile off.
The channel between the islands is known as "The Swinge" where the tides can reach up to seven knotts and build up to impressive overfalls in strong winds and spring tides.
Alderney is one of the smaller and one of the quaintest of the Channel Islands and Burhou is looked after by warden Midge Dupont in conjunction with the Alderney Harbour Office.

Burhou is important in terms of the bird life, hosting the largest population of both Puffins and Storm Petrels in the Channel Islands as well as a large population of breeding Lesser-Black-backed Gulls, Herring Gulls, Great Black-backed Gulls, Shags, Oystercatchers and occasional breeding Shelduck and cormorants.
In 2005 a research project was initiated by the States of Alderney to quantify the type of interaction between gulls and puffins.
From the data collected the States have agreed that appropriate action should be taken in 2006 to increase puffin recruitment to the island and also to reduce the summer mortality rate of puffins on Burhou.

Alderney Wildlife Trust are delighted to announce that the United Nations has officially recognised Alderney’s west coast and the Burhou Islands as wetlands of worldwide importance and, as of Thursday 25 August, this area of the island will become the first designated Ramsar site in the Bailiwick of Guernsey.
Entitled “Alderney West Coast and the Burhou Islands”, the designated Ramsar site extends to 1,500 hectares – some 600 hectares more than mainland Alderney – and includes all the waters from the island’s west coast out to the northern gannet colony of Ortac, Burhou, the islets and reefs that surround it and includes Les Etacs.
The rich birdlife of the west coast of Alderney and Burhou is particularly well-known and attracts keen birdwatchers throughout the year.

The eastern, and much of the southern cliffs are composed of the attractive Alderney sandstone, which was laid down by turbulent streams flowing from a landmass, which had been raised to the northwest after the intrusion of the granites.
The islets of Casquets, Ortac and Burhou to the northwest of the island are also composed of this same sandstone
The term "Alderney Cow", found in literature from Tobias Smollet to A.A.Milne, indicates a small, fawn, dairy cow, once popular in England with the landed gentry and prosperous farmers, often used as a house cow and yielding delicious rich milk and yellow cream.

Puffins on Burhou and gannets on Les Étacs just off Alderney are a favourite of many visitors to the island.
In August 2005, the west coast of Alderney and associated islands, including Burhou and Ortac, were designated as Ramsar wetlands of international importance.
There are two treacherous tidal streams on either side of the island: the Swinge between Alderney and Burhou, just outside the harbour, and Le Raz between the island and the Norman mainland.

It is reached by a causeway and was originally designed for ten 64-pounder guns in four open batteries, manned by two officers and 50 men.
The marine views are second to none: of the other islands, rocks and stacks; of two great colonies of gannets, which fish round the fort; of the lighthouses on the Casquets; and of the formidable race or current called the Swinge, which runs between Clonque and Burhou.
On all counts Fort Clonque is a most worthwhile place to have tackled, not least because when we embarked on it in 1966 military works such as this were disregarded everywhere.

Do not disturb birds on the water or on land and please restrict your boat speed when near bird colonies.
Boats in close to the puffin colony on Burhou can, if not careful, cause considerable disturbance to nesting birds.

Further to Patrick's answer Neil, the ALK archive has some other information on THV Burhou, in fact I worked her at Wolf Rock during the 1970s when a mechanic was taken off station.
It's good to know the old girl is still afloat.
Numerous local boats were used to service offshore AtoNs, like THV Strathclyde based in Milford Haven and Martha based in Barry Island, so Burhou is in good company.
