Chaperone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Many chaperones are heat shock proteins, that is, proteins expressed in response to elevated temperatures or other cellular stresses.
Chaperones were co-discovered by Art Horwich, now a professor at Yale University and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and Ulrich Hartl.
New functions for chaperones continue to be discovered, such as assistance in protein degradation and in responding to diseases linked to protein aggregation (see prion).

THE 90 kDa MOLECULAR CHAPERONE FAMILY   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
Chaperones play an essential role in the aetiology of numerous diseases, with a rapidly increasing role in clinical practice (Latchman, 1991; Welch, 1992; Burdon, 1993; Snyder and Sabatini, 1995; Jindal, 1996; van Eden and Young, 1996; Welch and Brown, 1996; Brooks, 1997).
The characteristic chaperone functions of the different families show that the 90 kDa molecular chaperones are somewhat different from the others, being the most "passive", since in most cases they only prevent the aggregation of unstable protein conformers, which is a rather general feature of almost all proteinaceous and chemical chaperones (Welch and Brown, 1996).
The ER chaperone complex is not as well characterized as the cytoplasmic foldosome, but if one takes into account the extremely high protein concentration of the ER lumen (estimated to be around 100 mg/ml), it is reasonable to assume that grp94 might be part of an even more complex supramolecular organization than hsp90.

Chaperones should keep a note of important contacts, for example, their Licensing Authority, the child's Licensing Authority, the Local Authority in whose area the child is performing, the child's Agent and the child's Parent/Legal Guardian.

 The chaperone
We have a rather elaborate "working-cycle" for the 60 kDa molecular chaperones, which possess a cavity, and are called Anfinsen-cage type chaperones to emphasize the fact that they provide a closed, protected environment to help the folding of their substrates.
In case of Anfinsen-cage type chaperones the "encircling" of the target is especially pronounced, where the oligomeric structure of the chaperone sequesters the target to its inner cavity and allows an undisturbed folding process preventing aggregation.
The Anfinsen-cage type chaperone machine-mediated entry of water molecules to the interior folding protein is not only a passive consequence of the chaperone-induced pulling/expansion of the target, but may significantly promote the conformational changes required to reach the native state.

Chaperon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A chaperon (or chaperone) is an adult or typically older person who accompanies or supervises one or more young, unmarried men or women during social occasions usually with the specific intent of preventing inappropriate social or sexual interactions or illegal behavior (e.g., underage drinking, drug use).
Chaperons for young men were not commonly used in Western society until the latter half of the 20th century.
Chaperons are often resisted and resented by the youths being supervised.

Yeast chaperones interact with human prions
The goal of this study was to assess whether or not molecular chaperones, whose known functions are to alter the conformational states of proteins (14-16), regulate the conversion of PrPC to PrPSc.
To test for chaperone involvement, we used a cell-free assay, wherein metabolically labeled [35-S]PrPC, purified from cultured cells in an acid-treated state, is converted to a conformational state characteristic of PrPSc (17, 18).
Therefore, the ability of the chaperones to mediate the conversion of PrPC to PrP-res was modestly facilitated by the absence of N-linked sugars or the GPI anchor.
