  Centipede - LoveToKnow 1911
The resemblance between the Chilopoda and the Diplopoda is principally superficial and due to the elongation and vermiform shape of the body, which in both is composed of a number of similar or subsimilar somites not differentiated as are those of Insecta, existing Arachnida and most Crustacea, into series or "tagmata" of varying function.
As a matter of fact, in the Chilopoda they are situated on the penultimate or pretelsonic somite; in the Hexapoda upon the antepenultimate somite (male) or a little farther forward (female).
Chilopoda with fifteen pairs of leg-bearing somites differentiated into larger and smaller, the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 8th, loth, 12th and 14th being large, the others small.

The basis of the hypothesis of a sister-group relationship between Chilopoda and Hexapoda is tenuous: In both groups the gonopores are located at the posterior end of the body, unlike the situation in Diplopoda, Pauropoda and Symphyla (‘Progoneata’, cf.
Both molecular data seta indicated that Diplopoda and Chilopoda were more closely related to each than to any other the other included groups and thus support the hypothesis of myriapod monophyly.

Diplopoda (the millipedes) and Chilopoda (the centipedes) are names familiar to most people.

Each body segment is formed in early development when two adjacent embryonic segments fuse, resulting in each adult body segment having two pairs of legs.
