Regional rail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Regional rail systems, or commuter rail systems, usually provide a rail service through a central business district area into suburbs or other locations that draw large numbers of people on a daily basis.
Commuter trains are usually optimized for maximum passenger volume, in most cases without sacrificing too much comfort and luggage space, though they seldom have all the amenities of long-distance trains.
For example, so called "intercity" trains in Belgium and the Netherlands carry many commuters and their equipment, range and speeds are similar to those of commuter trains in some larger countries.

The Austin Chronicle Politics: Commuter Rail: Stuck in the Station Again
Moore and other backers of commuter rail want to move freight trains off Union Pacific's tracks between Austin and San Antonio and onto an additional rail line on the proposed SH 130 corridor, which will be built parallel to I-35.
But the defeat of light rail referenda in Austin and San Antonio may be contributing to skittishness about commuter rail between the two cities, since clearly commuter rail would be more viable if it interconnected with other transportation systems, such as light rail.
There will be an effort by commuter rail supporters in the upcoming session of the Legislature to modify the 1997 bill and remove the requirement that counties be part of the rail district.

In the United States mass transit has, for the most part, meant some kind of local bus or rail service, and it is on these modes that this article focuses.
Nationwide in 1990, mass transit carried only 5.3 percent of commuting trips, down from 6.4 percent in 1980, and an even smaller percentage of total trips.
Part of the recovery was due to the rebirth of rail transit since the early 1970s.

Currently, commuter rail is a successful and popular option being utilized by San Diego, Los Angeles, The Bay Area, Dallas and Seattle; with new systems being studied for metro areas such as Salt Lake City and Denver.
The addition of commuter rail to Express Bus and Light Rail options would ensure that roadways and existing highway corridors would have additional capacity for future growth, while providing a pollution, congestion and stress free alternative to road-weary commuters.

Boston.com / News / Local / Commuter rail funding plan gathers steam
With New Hampshire unable to come up with funding to expand commuter rail service, Nashua is pushing ahead with plans to raise the necessary $14 million itself, and city planners believe they have come up with a plan that could serve as a model for other southern New Hampshire communities that want commuter rail service.
Some rail advocates, while praising Nashua's plan, also questioned a funding approach for commuter rail expansion that relies on cities and towns raising the money, rather than the state.
The state transportation department had wanted to use gas tax revenue to cover the expansion of commuter rail, but the state Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that the state constitution restricts use of the money to road construction, maintenance, and repair.
