Although a "console war" can be thought of as a battle between competing console manufacturers, much of the controversy and notoriety is associated with the supporters of each console, who often pledge loyalty to a console even before its release and engage in intense arguments over the merits of their chosen console.
Instead, the Spectrum vs. Commodore wars of the mid 1980s were the true origins of the console wars as the beginning of single format computer game magazines and their far greater entry into mainstream youth culture than the previous consoles.
In 2006, the next-generation war is expected to be between the new consoles of Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo: the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii, respectively.

You can have a favourite console, and mine's a ps2 (since it plays ps1 games as well, that's a bonus) but don't limit yourself to one console.
As to the one console line of thought, I have to agree with you, but the major problem is that some people don't have any money.

Coming into this year it was already clear that the competition between console companies, or the "console wars" as we are melodramatically inclined to call it, was going to be fierce, but I never expected it to heat up like this.
That said, the console is new, it has a lot of titles, and several developers are looking to make games for the system once they finish their current PS2 titles because they see it as a much easier platform to create for.
The console shouldn't be expected to come into its own for a couple of years.

I dont think that consoles will die, I just think you are going to get a merging with the next-gen systems and the PC because of the hardware requirements and everything.

Microsoft also discussed “Live Anywhere”, which will allow computer, mobile phone, and console gamers to play the same games simultaneously (mobile phones users will, of course, not enjoy the same experience.) A “Live Vision” camera was also announced — about time, too.
