Cordite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cordite is classified as an explosive, but it is normally used as a propellant for guns and rockets.
Cordite was developed in Great Britain in the late 19th Century and has been used since World War I by Britain, and in British Commonwealth countries, as a military propellant for firearms, artillery and naval guns.
Cordite SC was produced in different shapes and sizes, so the particular geometry of Cordite SC was indicated by the use of letters and/or numbers after the SC.

Cordite is not instantly ignited on contact with a flame such as that of a candle, because, perhaps, of the condensation of some moisture from the products of burning of the candle upon it.
Cordite may be kept in contact with clean, dry metals, wood, paper, and a number of ordinary substances without deterioration.
Should the cordite ~r other explosive contain traces of mercury salts, such as mercuric chloride, which is sometimes added as a preservative, this test is rendered nugatory, and no coloration may appear (or only after a long exposure), although the sample may be of indifferent stability.

Explosions in Warships During the War
Assuming that the immediate cause of the explosion was the ignition, by some means, of cordite in one of the after magazines, such ignition might be due either to a fire in the magazine or to spontaneous combustion of the cordite or other explosive stowed therein.
The new Cordite Regulations, which are now embodied as an appendix to the Naval Magazine Regulations, contain clauses which guard against the possibility of any cordite remaining ob board HM Ships without test beyond its allotted period, and the importance of carrying out these regulations with the utmost strictness cannot be exaggerated.
As regards the cordite, only four "lot" numbers of cordite had been supplied to the ship, and it was possible to call in all cordite remaining of these lots and to have it examined and tested.

Smokeless powder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Smokeless powder is the name given to a number of gunpowder-like propellants used in firearms which produce negligible smoke when fired, unlike the older fl powder which it replaced.
A modified form of this was devised by Sir Frederick Abel and James Dewar which eventually became known as cordite, leading to a lengthy court battle between Nobel and the other two inventors over patent infringement.
A triple-base flashless cordite was also developed, primarily for large naval guns, but also used in battle tank ammunition.

When cordite detonates the report is very much sharper than when it burns and also the smoke is greyish.
Whether the cordite detonates or not depends to some extent on the way it is held up to the explosion, in other words the confinement of the individual sticks next to the shell.

Shakey Pete's Shootin' Shack: Gunpowder, An Overview Of Modern Smokeless Propellants
A factoid about Cordite that some may find interesting is that a large amount of ammonia was used in it's manufacture, along with other chemicals, that gave it a strong, peculiar and unpleasant smell when the cartridges were fired.
This gave rise to the term "the stench of Cordite", a term that is still used today by the ignorant.
It's been a VERY long time since Cordite was used, the smell of today's propellants is nothing like that.

The other girls stand round the table laying out the golden cords in graduated sizes from the thickness of rope to the thinness of macaroni, the clear khaki and scarlet of their dresses shining back from the wet floor in a perpetually changing pattern as they move quickly about their work.
And there are two things about the cordite village which the State ought never to forget, and which ought to be impressed upon the public mind by the bestowal of military rank upon the girls.

She was a veteran of Jutland: an account by her Surgeon may be read by clicking here.
Of the three, sabotage is the least likely: no agency or individual has ever claimed responsiblity; there has never been any evidence turn up in support of the theory; and just as important is the fact that when she was lost, Vanguard was one of the least modern ships in the Grand Fleet.
Instead, the most likely cause was the second: a fire in an adjacent compartment (coal bunker or patent fuel space) which smoldered away undetected, long enough for some cordite near the adjoining bulkhead to overheat to dangerous levels.
