Dragunov Sniper Rifle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dragunov Sniper Rifle (Russian: Снайперская винтовка Драгунова, Snayperskaya Vintovka Dragunova, abbreviated SVD, GRAU index 6V1), is a semiautomatic rifle designed by Evgeniy Fedorovich Dragunov in the Soviet Union between 1958 and 1963.
In 1963, the Dragunov Sniper Rifle was accepted into the arsenal of the Soviet Army.
In the 1980s, Evgeniy Fedorovich Dragunov developed the SVDS, a version of the SVD with a folding metal stock, shortened (590mm) but heavier barrel, and a shortened flash suppressor, intended for paratroopers and motorized infantry.

This is because the term "Dragunov" seems to be slightly generic, and refers to many different guns made by different countries that are all based, in one way or another, upon the original Russian design.
The typical Russian soldier issued a Dragunov is also specially trained, moves with his squad, and his primary function is to engage at ranges to around 600m (extending the typical effective engagement range limit - which without him would be the maximum effective range of the AK assault rifle; being around 300m).

Third, instead of using Kalashnikov's long-stroke gas piston form of operation, Dragunov designed a short-stroke gas piston system which lowers the weight of the bolt carrier, reducing muzzle flip and recoil.
The gas system also includes a regulator which can be adjusted to suit certain adverse conditions, such as excess fouling and extremely cold temperatures.
