  Drum - LoveToKnow 1911
The sound is produced by striking the centre of the vellum on the one end of the drum with a stick having a large soft round knob composed of wood covered with cork, sponge or felt.
The notation for the side drum is similar to that in use for the bass drum; the value of the note is alone of importance; the place of the note on the staff is immaterial and purely a matter of custom.
The popularity of all kinds of drums in the most ancient civilizations is established beyond a doubt by the numerous representations of the instrument in a variety of shapes and sizes on the monuments and paintings of Egypt, Assyria, India and Persia.

Drum (musical instrument) - MSN Encarta
Drum (musical instrument), musical instrument consisting of one or two stretched membranes, called heads, held taut across a bowl-shaped or tubular frame, called a shell, and sounded by percussion; that is, by striking the instrument with the hands or with sticks.
Drum shells that are basically tubular vary in their actual shape, from cylindrical, as in a bass drum; to barrel shaped, as in some drums of China and India; to goblet shaped, as in the single-headed Middle Eastern darabuka; to hourglass shaped, as in the double-headed Japanese tsuzumi.
The snare drum is related to the tabor, a double-headed drum, often with a simple gut snare, which is played in combination with a three-hole pipe in modern European folk music, as it was in the Middle Ages (from about the 5th century to the 15th century ad).

 Drum Tuning Bible
The interval between drums is more important than many realize and the size of both the diameter and the depth are key to getting even resonance and the desired incremental notes between drums.
When the drum is hit, the ear hears mostly the attack and the fundamental pitch of the drum, the sound of the stick tip hitting the head can be accentuated by the resonant head and we refer to these as overtones.
Even though the drum has been equally tensioned (such as that of using tension devises which measure lug torque or head tension), inferior hardware and shell problems cause unequal stretch of the head polymer and/or force the head out of round.

Taiko Drum Master for PlayStation 2 Review - PlayStation 2 Taiko Drum Master Review
Taiko Drum Master still has a distinctly Japanese flavor, though, thanks to its oh-so-cute characters, some bizarre minigames, and, of course, the fact that you play the game using a traditional (plastic) Japanese (made in China) taiko drum and two sticks.
You'll play Taiko Drum Master by hitting the drum peripheral, which is supplied with the game, on its surface and rim as red and blue notes (represented by cute Taiko faces) travel across the screen.
We don't wish to be overly critical of the drum peripheral, by the way, but consider this a warning that it's very hard to play Taiko Drum Master quietly--at least if you're looking to get a good score or unlock some of the game's bonus content, which includes additional tracks and a fourth difficulty level.

Drums are among the world's oldest and most ubiquitous musical instruments, and the basic design has been virtually unchanged for hundreds of years.
