Dryden, was founded as an agricultural community by John Dryden, then Ontario's Minister of Agriculture in 1896.

John Dryden, Ontario Minister of Agriculture, arranged for the founding of a pioneer farm within Dryden's present townsite, and from this developed an agricultural community supplying the mining and logging camps in its hinterland.
The Dryden area was part of the Ojibway nation, which covered a large area from Lake Huron in the east to Lake of the Woods and beyond, disputed by Cree from the north, and Sioux from the south.
Dryden's original industry was a sawmill, established by and for the first settlers in 1896, and in the early days there were a number of sawmills, and even a brickyard making bricks from the local clay.

Current research in northwestern Ontario is aimed at unraveling the tectonic history of the region at 2.7 billion years ago when the Archean craton was assembled.
Other samples from Dryden and the Vermillion Bay area record a subsequent retrograde event that produced andalusite at 2650 Ma (shown here in thin section), which requires substantial uplift in a fairly short time after the peak of metamorphism.
D3 z-folds near Dryden indicate a late oblique (NW-SE) compressional event at 2650 Ma that may be related to the formation of gold deposits in the area.
