Albert Durer was born in the imperial city of Nuremberg, the 21rst of May, in 1471, in family of Hungarian goldsmiths.

Durer executed " Melancholy"[1] the year his mother died, and according to Erwin Panovski represents the "spiritual self-portrait.  According to Durer, the artist's genius casts him to the depths of melancholy (Greek melan=fl, cholé=bile).

Albrecht Durer Biography : Life, Paintings, Drawings & Woodcuts
Albrecht Durer has come to stand for German art somewhat as Raphael once stood for Italian art and he had a great influence on the development of the European renaissance in Germany.
They reveal Durer as one of the distinctively modern men of the Renaissance: intensely, but not arrogantly, conscious of his own personality ; accepting with ease the universal admiration of his genius, a personal admiration, too, of a quite modern kind ; careful of his fame as one who could see that it would last.
Durer was perhaps the greatest infant prodigy among painters, and the drawing of himself at the age of twelve shows how early he had mastered that simple and abrupt sincerity of Gothic draughtsmanship.

 Durer's Polyhedra
Durer travelled to Italy to learn perspective and wanted to publish the methods so they were not kept secret among a few artists.
Durer's Underweysung der Messung contains a very interesting discussion of perspective and other techniques and it typifies the renaissance idea that polyhedra are models worthy of an artist's attention.
While the net is correct, his techniques of perspective were still under development, and it is interesting to observe that the projection at the upper right has a number of inaccuracies.

Albrecht Durer Gothic font family : MyFonts   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
I had previously seen fonts based on the peculiar style of lettering Durer used on prints for his signature and some captions, but this style was radically different and much more characteristic of the lettering and early printed types of the ‘Northern Renaissance’; which Durer was a big part of.
Whether it’s authentically Durer’s work or not is up in the air, but it’s a very nice example of early gothic type.
We've called the resulting font Albrecht Durer Gothic and it’s a very striking face well suited to titles and other contemporary uses where you need something heavy and eye catching.
