  Albedo: Definition and links.
For example, Eismitte is a weather station situated a bit south of the geographical center of the island (near 70°N) at an altitude of 9843 feet.
But the actual average July temperature at Eismitte is only -12°C (10°F), and furthermore, the next warmest month is June, at only -17°C (2°F).
June being warmer than August is a clear sign that there are some outside influences on the climate, in particular that sunlight plays an unusually large role in regulating temperature, because June is the sunniest month of the year in most of the northern part of the Northern Hemisphere.

Wegener had earlier written his brother Kurt of the polar explorer's "obligation to be a hero." This was doubly true for an expedition leader, so on September 21 Wegener himself led a 15-dogsled run to relieve Eismitte.
Wegener wrote it was now "a matter of life and death" for his friends at Eismitte.
At Eismitte, the travelers were delighted to find that Georgi and Sorge had been able to dig an ice cave for shelter; moreover, they thought they could stretch their supplies through the winter.

All towns and settlements of Greenland are situated along the ice-free coast, with the population being concentrated along the Western coast.
At least two scientific expedition stations had been established in the ice-covered central part of Greenland, on the ice cap: Eismitte and North_Ice.
The extreme North of Greenland is not covered by an ice_cap (indicated as pale blue in the map to the right), because the air there is too dry to produce snow, which is essential in the production and maintenance of an ice cap.

Although a large proportion of their supplies is lost en route, he, Fritz Loewe and Rasmus Villumsen continue their journey to 'Eismitte' - at temperatures as low as -54° C. On 30 October they finally reach the station.

Analyzing Sorge’s data, Bader developed a mathematical expression that came to be known as “Sorge’s Law of Densification.” With this law as their guide, later investigators, such as the American Chester C. Langway, could determine the amount of annual accumulation even though they could not detect annual layers in their ice cores.
For all the science it accomplished, the 1930 Wegener Expedition would be most remembered for the singular fact that after Alfred Wegener departed Eismitte on the morning of November 1, 1930, to return to the base camp, he was never again seen alive.
The scientists at Eismitte had no way of communicating to the base camp that Wegener had departed the mid-ice camp.

EF (Ice Cap) climate: All twelve months have average temperatures below 0 °C. This climate is dominant in Antarctica (e.g., Scott Base) and in inner Greenland (e.g., Eismitte).
Occasionally, a third, lower-case letter is added to ET climates if either the summer or winter is clearly drier than the other half of the year; thus Qikiqtaruk, or Herschel Island, off the coast of Canada's Yukon Territory, becomes ETw, with Pic du Midi de Bigorre in the French Pyrenees acquiring an ETs designation.
