The Football League - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Football League was founded in 1888 with 12 member clubs, but steady growth and the addition of more divisions meant that by 1959 the League had 92 clubs.
The League Cup was established in 1960 and is open to all Football League and FA Premier League clubs, with the winner eligible to participate in the UEFA Cup.
In 1920 the Football League admitted the clubs from the first division of the Southern League (the Southern League continued with its remaining clubs) and Grimsby Town, who had failed to be re-elected to the Second Division the season before and been replaced by Cardiff City (of the Southern League).

the League may be slimming down the Premiership for example) 3, sometimes 4 teams are relegated on account of their having accrued fewer points than the other teams in the league.
The next league lower down will promote 2 or 3 teams automatically on account of their having the most points in that league.

That should mean a bigger handout for each of the 72 member clubs, a large percentage of whom have been struggling since the collapse of ITV Digital.
Football League chairman Brian Mawhinney said: "As this is a significant deal they (the clubs) can look forward to receiving a little more from us next season."

 English Football History
The rules, regulations and formats have all been formulated by The Football League, and now controlled by the Football Association, shaping the sport into what has been described by many as the "beautiful game".
Yet the humble beginnings of the League may surprise many, not least the fact that the competition was the brainchild of a Scotsman and not an Englishman, one William McGregor, a Birmingham-based businessman and official at Aston Villa Football Club.
The year of 1958 also bear witness to a tragedy for English football when most of the team of the club that pioneered English clubs’ entry into European football, Manchester United FC, died in a horrific plane crash in Munich.

The new set-up was not called the English League as initially it hoped it too would include Scottish clubs, but these later (1890) formed their own league instead.
Then, just as they were considering some type of league reform, in 2002 their lucrative tv deal with ITV Digital collapsed, threatening the futures of many clubs.
In 2004 the Football League decided to call its top division 'the Football League Championship' (which presumably they thought sounded better than the 'Premiership wannabes league'), thus 'elevating' the old Division 2 and 3 to 'new' Leagues 1 and 2.
