 ETIOLOGY OF TEMPOROMANDIBULAR DISORDERS
It is apparent that the inconsistencies in the etiology of TMD lie in the classification and definition of "an event" which triggers the onset of symptoms.
A perfect example of the inconsistency regarding the etiology of TMD can be seen in a comparison of studies as reported by Okeson.
Thus, the etiology of TMD will depend on the specific case at hand and be revealed only after systemic evaluation and subsequent elimination of other possible etiologic factors.

The etiology of CIN is variously reported to be secondary to metabolic diseases, drugs (i.e., analgesics or analgesic mixtures), or known environmental factors (e.g., industrial pollution with lead, cadmium, mercury, etc.).
Unraveling the etiology of BEN will also allow appropriate preventive measures to be taken in the afflicted areas, such as by treatment or filtration of the drinking and cooking water or changing the main water supply.

NIH Guide: Multidisciplinary Research On The Etiology And Prevention Of Breast Cancer
Endocrinology (Hormones/Growth Factors) - The role of hormones in etiology and chemoprevention that may affect neoplastic processes, either by acting alone or in conjunction with non-hormonal chemical carcinogens and inhibitors, should be studied in vitro and in vivo.
Additional studies are needed to define the molecular events involved in the etiology of breast cancer, to identify molecular markers for each stage in the initiation and progression of the disease, and to identify specific genes and gene products involved in the process.
For the purpose of this policy, clinical research is defined as human biomedical and behavioral studies of etiology, epidemiology, prevention (and preventive strategies), diagnosis, or treatment of diseases, disorders or conditions, including but not limited to clinical trials.

CDC - Perceived Etiology of Foodborne Illness among Public Health Personnel
If the personnel commonly responsible for recognizing, reporting, and intervening in foodborne illness are unfamiliar with common pathogenic causes of such illnesses, the appropriateness of their responses may be compromised.
Studies on factors that affect both academic knowledge of the causes of foodborne illness, as well as factors such as severity and risk (which likely strongly influence perception of their relative importance), would be of value.
While it is true that the etiology is not identified in a large proportion of foodborne illnesses, lack of knowledge on the part of public health personnel is only one barrier to improving this situation.

Abstract: Superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome is a critical condition in which an intrathoracic mass lesion compresses the SVC and promotes the development of head and upper body edema and cyanosis.
We conclude that: (1) SVCS per se should not be feared (symptomatic relief is the rule), (2) accurate diagnosis can be achieved with minimal morbidity, and (3) the versatile underlying etiology dictates the outcome that can be improved with appropriate therapy.

Because of the large proportion of childhood cancer cases that are diagnosed and treated at an institution affiliated with a clinical trials cooperative group, it is possible to investigate etiologic hypotheses in less common childhood cancers.

The Philosophy of War [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
This is derived from contextual common denominators, that is elements that are common to all wars, and which provide a useful and robust definition of the concept.
Various sub-disciplines have grappled with war's etiology, but each in turn, as with definitions of war, often reflects a tacit or explicit acceptance of broader philosophical issues on the nature of determinism and freedom.
For example, an emphasis on man's reason as the cause of war is apt to ignore deep cultural structures that may perpetuate war in the face of the universal appeal to peace, and similarly may ignore inherited pugnacity in some individuals or even in some groups.

 McClamrock: Functional Analysis and Etiology
Wimsatt [1972] is perhaps the grandaddy of such arguments; but more recent support for the relevance of etiology to function---particularly in the psychological and social domains, and not just the biological ones---is offered by Dretske [1981 and 1991], Elster [1983], and Sober [1985].
But functions still might be a critical and ineliminable part of the causal explanation of the presence of particular features in current organisms.
Using etiology to guide functional analysis is now (and should be) widespread, even outside the biological domain.

To probe the etiology of anxiety, researchers began to devote their energies to the study of other brain circuits and the neurotransmitters on which they rely.

GENDER DIFFERENCES IN ETIOLOGY OF DATING COUPLE VIOLENCE BY UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
It is widely believed that partner-assaults perpetrated by women have a different etiology than partner assaults perpetrated by men.
Although this review of previous research revealed a number of differences between men and women in risk factors for intimate partner violence, considerably more of the risk factors examined were found to apply to both genders.
Thus, statements that the etiology of domestic assaults is different for women need to refer to specific risk factors rather than stating or implying that the etiology of partner violence is generally different for women.
