Alaska once had a June 1 petition deadline for independent and nonqualified party candidates, but it was struck down in a 1988 lawsuit brought by a Libertarian.
Even after a party is "qualified" (by means of submitting a petition signed by one-half of 1% of the last vote cast), if it is a minor party, it must get thousands of non-members to sign for its nominees, in order to nominate them.
However, on January 1, new national chairman Jack Gargan took office, and he appointed a new parliamentarian, who ruled a few days later that the November 1999 vote of the national committee, setting the convention in St. Paul, was valid.

 Snow Industry Sales Up 1.4% Thru February
For the month of February, specialty apparel sales (including tops, bottoms and snowboard) were up 9% in dollars to $82.8 million as compared to $73.7 million in February 2003.
By the end of February, all snowboard apparel was up a considerable 17% in dollars to $91.2 million in sales for the season thus far.
Overall sales at specialty stores were up 1% in dollars to $1.61 billion for August 2003 through February 2004 as compared to $1.59 billion for the same period last season.

On January 24, First Lady Laura Bush testified before the Senate Education Committee on the learning needs of children "between the crib and the classroom." Originally, she was supposed to testify last year, on September 11, but the session was postponed after word reached Congress about the World Trade Center tragedy.
The next Satellite Town Meeting (February 19, 8:00-9:00 EST) will showcase the range of educational options available to parents and children -- particularly those children who would otherwise be left behind in low-performing schools -- and highlight the strong connection between school accountability and parental choice.
The "Education Leadership Summit," to be moderated by former North Carolina Governor James Hunt, is the first time that all six of the living secretaries have participated in such a discussion (Terrel Bell died in 1996).

Furthermore, as of January 1, 2008, and thereafter, 75% of the programming distributor's pre-rule nonexempt video programming being distributed and exhibited on each channel during each calendar quarter must be provided with closed captioning.
With regard to new nonexempt Spanish language programming, between January 1, 2004, and December 31, 2006, 900 hours of such programming must be closed captioned per channel per quarter, an increase from 450 hours, leading to the final benchmark of 100% of new nonexempt Spanish language programming starting January 1, 2010.

The guys over at Imaging Resource got the paws on Fuji's "6 megapixel" S1 Pro digital SLR and shot a couple of samples (as they admit, in poor circumstances, but noticeably very little noise on the ISO1600 image), they've also posted an updated article on the camera along with some interesting insight.
Here's an interesting article from AP on Kodak's new tie-up with HP to produce digital photo machines to be installed in retail stores, you simply drop off your memory cards (or other media one assumes) and get much higher quality prints than can be achieved at home.
