The Finger Lakes Region, as the Heart of New York State and the subject of twelve books by Emerson Klees, is bounded by the I-390 Expressway in the West,The New York State Thruway in the North, the I-81 Expressway and Route 13 in the East, and I-86, the Southern Tier Expressway, in the South.
It is said that the Finger Lakes were made by the impression of the hand of the Great Spirit on central New York State.
According to the legend, there are six Finger Lakes because the hand of Manitou slipped when he was pushing the portion of Indian Paradise down from the heavens, causing six indentations that later became the lakes.

Since many of the major towns and attractions in the area tend to be clustered at the top or bottom ends of lakes, when traveling by car it's probably easiest to move in one direction from east to west or west to east, rather than circling entire lakes, which although not wide are certainly long.

Regardless, the lakes help to make the area very condusive for growing first-class wine grapes and, in fact, NY State is the second only to California in wine production in the US.
The southern lakes in the US I have been exposed to - like Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia, Lake Norman and Wylie in the Charlotte, NC area - are much more shallow and much more murkey than any of the Finger Lakes.
If they had lakes like these deep, glacier-formed lakes in a hotter climate - they would be impossible for anyone that wasn't a millionare to live on.

ALBANY, N.Y. (January 8, 2007) -- New York continues to see a decline in physician supply in the Finger Lakes and Western New York, despite overall gains statewide, according to a new study by the Center for Health Workforce Studies at the University at Albany's School of Public Health.
Despite overall growth in the physician supply between 2001 and 2005, the Finger Lakes and Western New York regions experiences physician declines of six percent and 10 percent, respectively, between 2001 and 2005.
The change in primary care physician supply ranged from a two percent decline in the Finger Lakes to an eight percent decline in the North Country.
