GRAVESHAM'S mayoral chains of office have been stolen in a dramatic airport snatch.
An opportunist thief made off with a case containing the mayor and mayoress's chains and badges of office as they were waiting in the departure lounge at terminal two.
The chain and badge are 22-years-old and were made by Gravesend jeweller Benjamin Battershill after the formation of the borough of Gravesham in 1974.

Gravesham Councillor Frank Marvin says the state of The Street and Halfpence Lane is "appalling" because of the number of pot holes and speeding and flooding problems.
Cllr Marvin who represents Cobham claims he has asked Gravesham Council for "remedial work" to be carried out since he became councillor back in May 1997 and nothing has been done about it.
But Cllr Leadley insists although Gravesham Council carries out the work, funding for improvements, which is expected to run into "hundreds of thousands of pounds", has to come from Kent County Council (KCC).
